Cape York '09

Well this year on the school's annual 4x4 trip organized by the teachers and parents we are heading to Cape York! Dad's pretty excited as he requested it last year.

Straight to the point, The folks are going to finally do the Disco 3 up this year and are wondering what would be a suitable set up to be 'road worthy' for a cape york trip?

All suggestions are welcome!

Hamish!

check out the recommended spares "sticky" on the Ozzie forum but Off Road Tyres , plus extra spare and snorkel come to mind firstly.
As you are taking kids you will also need a good medical kit and a Sat phone
Take the road less traveled. Dual battery system.ORS drawers,LR cargo Barrier.ARB Bull bar, side protection bars,Mickey Thompson ATR's 17" rims, Rear wheel carrier, radiator guard TPMS Mitchell Bros Tow Hitch LR RAI Steel Rims , GME UHF, Off Road GPS, Llams (yet to be fitted)

Get a Safari snorkel or fully waterproof the Land Rover 'raised air intake'. You should also waterproof the connector on the Transfer Control Module which is behind the battery. My Cooper STT's survived the trip but the Mickey Thompson's and a 10 ply on split rims were shredded. See my gallery for the Nolan creek crossing Mr. Green Got stuck initially and wet mats but backed out and crossed a bit to my right ok. If I hadn't waterproofed the TCM I might have been stuck as others have Shocked

Hampster, you could also look at a Cargo Barrier which will allow you to pack more into the D3 and keep you safe from heavy objects flying around the cabin.
Should be a great trip.

Yes, we have been considering better storage solutions for the trip this year, last year I thought we where quite unorganized, but we where the first ones to setup and pack up =p. I think the key is just to bring a minimum amount of fiddly items such as tents etc..

So far we are considering... New tyre set, Bulbar, Snorkel, Better Antenna and mount it onto bulbar, metal roof rack cage...

I fitted a set of drawers and fridge slide which made organising recovery gear and small items of tin food, bread, snacks knives forks spoons plates and cups very easy. Also made them easy to find. I then packed my tent, sleeping gear and chairs on top of the drawers.

I used a water bladder that held 55 ltrs and placed it on the floor in the rear.

One thing to remember, the spare is difficult to get at with the vehicle packed (7 seater) as you need to raise a seat to get at the spare. If you dont get a spare wheel carrier have a look at the threads on the forum and see how some of the guys have attached a socket to the winder, make sure its waterproof if go down this path

Yes we somewhat found it annoying as out of all the cars on the trip last year our disco decided it would roll the tyre/have a puncture in it... which slowed us down! was the first time knowing we had to unwind it from the back after referring to the manual at the dalhousie ruins, sa.

But yes, I think this year all the food will be concealed to one vehicle as it was a pain trying to find where things where in each of the other convoys!

Just wondering, my father wants to get the car raised more just for some added protection and peace of mind, and for 'show'.

Would the best option be those adjustable sensor rods available at $420?

Have fun!
I will be interested to see what you come up with for what you take for your trip and how/where you store/carry it all.
I have REALLY gone off bullbars recently.
Having done a LOT of outback and night driving in QLD and NT I only ever hit 2 Kangaroos. One I managed to slow down enough that neither Kangaroo or car were damaged at all Very Happy and the other smashed front light and squashed front crossmember (in a sedan) but didn't damage bodywork or radiator.
So for the cost (~$2000 fitted) plus the extra weight (~ 70-90Kg) (all hanging off the front) I don't think it is a good investment. Remember that the GVM is 3230Kg and it's kerb weight is 2504-2718 (depending on specs)Kg (or the auto) only leaves 512-726Kg ALL up for load including passengers. Take out 2 x 80Kg passengers (avg weight of Adult Australian!) leaves only 352-566Kg for load.
Fridge ~20-30Kg
Spare tire and wheel ~25-30Kg
roof rack ~20Kg (limited to 70-90Kg max on roof (I think) including weight of rack.
Bullbar ~90Kg
plus camping gear, food, clothes, water (20Kg), spare fuel (20-40Kg)
and you are really getting close to an overloaded vehicle.

Peter

You may be right, but here in Sydney I've twice had my bullbar collected in supermarket car parks. Shocked

No other damage. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Father was having a chat with the teacher this morning about what he was planing to do, He's thinking of skipping the bullbar, Taking the 20' rims off and swapping them for 16' rims and putting some really 'phat' 4x4 tyres on.

As for storage we will put one of those metal cages on the top.

Now we are wondering, will a snorkel be any good for a V8 petrol? when going through the water crossing?

If you get a teaspoon of water inside a diesel cylinder the
high compression ratio will bend the conrods.
Generally ingested water in a petrol motor isnt terminal.
I went to the cape a few years ago and the only very deep crossing
was Nolan Creek.....it flooded a few cars so i gave it a miss.
I could have done the rest without a snorkle.
It all depends on what time you go and how early the wet finishes.
Its not nearly as tough as its reputation.

Ah yes, That's what we thought about the diesel engines, We will only be doing the travel through out the day, no night time driving, Once I get the itinerary from the college staff I'll post it up to give you a fair idea of what's happening on the trip!

Mr.Hamster,

I think that V8 has larger discs, so the minimum wheel dia is 18" or 19"? (I will wait for the correction) Smile

I would skip the bullbar, I have found that by driving during daylight hours AND slowing down that I have not

had the 'roo strikes Smile

You DO need a snorkel or Big Cry
