HID Driving Lights
I am considering a pair of Cat Series HID lights from Piranha and was wondering if anyone has any experience with these lights. With the Bi-xeons I was thinking two pencils ratehr than one pencila nd one spread.
They seem cheap at $295 each plus the wiring loom.
Thanks in advance

No experience with that brand, however, I have a pair of Cibie Super Oscars, aand have fitted them with Xenons off fleebay (H1 globe kit cost $100.00 at the time) and highly recommend the upgrade. As always, Xenons take a second or two to come up to full strength, and some roadside signs can become overexposed causing alot of reflected glare, so would caution against the 55w versions. I run a spot and driving, because that's how the kit came, but think I would rather a pair of driving. These goive better spread for open country driving, the spots really good for high speed straight lines.
The best lights I've ever run, but are unavailable since about 1982, were the Hella 192 series. Ran a central spot and the glass flute gave the light a wide and narrow (cats eye) spill You could see for miles in 160deg. arc

I seem to remember that Piranah came out well in the tests in 4x4 mag. I was thinking along the same lines of two pencils rather than the driving plus pencil but Not sure if the HID would cover it.
Look at the beam pattern for the lights and superimpose over the D3 light pattern. (HID on left Halogen on right)

Sidewinder sell the lights as well, the image below shows their pencil beam compared to the spread beam.
I'd be interested in your thoughts Caver, do you have an image of the bi-xeon light pattern?

That would be the one on the left.
It is a bit distorted as it is not directly from above. Maybe 120m with the spead about 60-70m?
Thinking about it I think that is dipped? The full beam has twin halgen spots as well.
The sidewinder ones go a long way even on driving beam.
I think we need someone with some fitted to tell us their experience.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Looks like 1 pencil and 1 spread is the bette option.
Thanks for your help, I will post my thoughts when they are installed.
Cheers

I have Cibie Turini (discontinued, but larger than Super Oscar) and would love a Xenon upgrade if possible. Any hints on where I might start looking to find a kit ?

I had 3 x Cibie Turini on my Disco2, one pencil in the middle and two spreads on sides. It was great, but the pencil was so long and skinny I found it was not much use, especially in anything but long dead straight roads. And with vibration, it would get out of alignment, and be even less use. I would never bother with buying a pencil again.New MY15 TDv6 D4 in Buckingham Blue

The Piranhas are good. Have run a set for over a year. Don't bother with an HID pencil, you'll never need that sort of distance in the real world. A spread/pencil is best or just spreads.--

Thanks for everyone's comments. I have been quoted $610 for the pair postage and harness included from ABR Sidewinder in Brisbane

Steve, so two spreads? Let us know how they go.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Nah one of each, I do a lot of the Toowoomba/Roma/Injune run and with the long straight stretches combined with the Disco's Bi-Xeons I think 1 of each will suit me better. Just transferred my money to Derek Bester of ABR so should have them on within a week. Followup post and photos to come.
Cheers

Is there any reason why the halogen high beams couldn't be replaced with an HID kit, perhaps in 50W to ensure the same current draw?
