4-5 Bike Carrier?

Have an old bike carrier that manage 3 bikes form a previous car but kids (7,8,9) are getting back into biking and now looking at how we will carry 5 bikes on a Disco 3. Anyone got any suggestions?

5 bikes is going to be a squeeze. Thule and Atera make a 4-bike carrier for the tow bar. With a bit of imagination, you'll get 5 on particularly if some of them are kids size bikes. If you alternate adult, child, adult you can get more on. Watch the weight on the towbar though.

Thanks.

Came across this one. Dumb question but I assume I would need a tow bar (detachable ok)? to fit this. Tow bars seem to be about £200 second hand from what I can see on e-bay

The one you have linked to says 'for bolt on tow bars only' so guess only the MH bar would be suitable.

Don't forget that you also need the tow electrics so you can keep your rear lights legal. TLO was indicating a few weeks ago that there might be some issue with short term availabilty of the tow electrics so it might be worth checking with himas to the current availabilty status Thumbs Up

http://www.bikerackshop.co.uk/thule-G5-909...-racks.htm plus the 4th bike adaptor (on same page) works fine with the detachable towbar, as does http://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel4...uery=20384

Bars - Bolt on or Detachable?

Looking at a 5 x bike carrier and best I have seen is this

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic35136.html

but it is bolt on tow bar only. Apart from the obvious convienience of bolt v detachable, is there a cost difference (seen bolt on at £50 Confused ). Do they need to be wired in etc....Advice welcome.

Put some on the towbar and the rest on the roof. It isn't that inaccessible when you lower the suspension if you have a Thule carrier with all the fasteners and tighteners etc. positioned at the bottom (at roof level).

Also keeps the back free for boot access etc.

Put 3 or 4 on the back, and drop a front wheel out of one and put whole bike in the boot JD Thumbs Up

have a look at the MaxxRaxx, see if it suits. Weight is not a problem on the D3 and it is quick to take the bikes (and it) on and off.....once you have had a practice Whistle

don't be fooled by the tilt down bit as it will hurt you if you have any bikes on it Shocked

You can store the bike support bar across the back of the car when you are parked Thumbs Up

However as it supports the bikes in only one place a bit of jiggling can be required ti get bikes balanced properly and clear of everything. Although I have done a lot of miles at high speed with mine with no issues beyond using bits of plastic tubing to protect bike paint where I strap them together.

Lots of departure angle still as well Thumbs Up

SPOTTER.........

Thanks, starting from scratch so having to look at tow bars as well. The MaxxRaxx looks great. Assume you have bolt on tow bar? Any idea as to what they cost. I see them advertised chaeply and then I see them advertised with electri wiring at up to £300. Very confusing Question

I have the swan neck detachable tow bar......you do need the electrics (which is a DIY job) for the lightboard.

The Maxx Raxx fitting stops the towbar stowing in its slot in the boot locker so now it lives under the seats.

As to prices I am afraid I paid full whack for mine when I bought it. Try TLO for anew one otherwise I suspect it is ebay.

Cheers, it says on the roofbox website that the MaxxRaxx 5 bike range only works on 'bolt on bars' not detachable?
