Cheers guys. Just spoke to them. They do a version for detachables and they don't sell this through trade but it is about £70 more than the 'bolt on' version. They were very aware of this website . Not to worried about having a permanent tow bar on, just depends how much tow bars are?

We also use the Maxxraxx unit (a 4x4 one originally used on our Discovery 300 series) fitted to a multi-height towbar.
Currently only have need to carry 4 bikes (all mountain bike, and fulls size). Have just done a near 900mile trip without any incident (other than me reversing all the bikes into a fence, forgot they were on - lol)
Just make sure you use both tie straps if carry 2 or more bikeswith the Maxxraxx unit.

Thanks. Minor issue now in that to buy the MaxxRaxx and tow bar looks the best part of £400-£500 and wife having none of it

Also a vote for the Maxxraxx.
I have the 5 bike version on the swan neck tow hook. It takes 5 bikes and there are no issues with driving (apart from the usual fuel economy and the a slight change in handling with all that extra weight hanging off the back - but you get that with any bike rack).
The adaptor does need professional fitting to get the alignment and torque settings (although I'm sure a competent person could do all this themselves). Maxxraxx subcontract this to mobile fitters.
Its not a cheap set-up. But no option for 5 bikes will be cheap. Be it 3 bikes on the back and 2 on the roof.
And they do come up for sale on here sometimes. Thats where I got all mine - tow bar and rack for about half of the new price. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
