When you say that it was slipping the gears can you elaborate or describe the symptoms a bit more please?

Did it feel like it was dropping into Neutral (i.e. revs shoot up very quickly and no noticeable forward acceleration), or did it feel like clutch slip in a manual box where the revs rise up (albeit not as quickly as if it were in neutral) and it still accelerates (although not very strongly)?

Did you ever get any messages or lights on the dash?

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul, yes dropping into Neutral and no forward motion until I hit the gear lever which would obviously then move the linkage enough for it to engage gears again, it was only just starting to happen about 10 times on and off until I found this thread and this seems to have cured the problem. No messages on the dash or faults reported.

Thanks for the advice and pics on this! My gear selector had been getting increasingly stiff over the past couple of weeks (we've had a pretty wet September) and last night it started jumping out of D into N - First time it did it was when I was waiting to turn right into a minor road, was flashed by a nice policeman who slowed to let me turn, only to find I stopped halfway across the road with the car revving nicely, but no movement Embarassed . Took me a moment to realise what had happened. It happen again a little later on, so I had a hunt on the forum.. Thumbs Up

As it wasn't really bad, I fixed it today by just removing the 3 right hand bolts from the gearbox cover, which gave me enough access to get to the pivot with a can of penetrating oil. A few movements of the selector from P to D has freed it up. I then addedd some WD40, and it now moves smoothly and feels like new. Not sure how long this will cure it for, but it only took about 10 minutes to do it this way..

It may be worth all Auto owners dropping the undertray (simple job) and copper greasing the cable clamp/pivot which should stop the corrosion before any sets in.

Why copper grease, what's the advantages over other types of grease? Is this the best to use for this, and if so why?

Hi guys, I seem to be having the same problem, well I think. For the past week or so the car slips from d to n, when I slow down or brake. However yesterday it just slipped to neutral while driving and wouldn't go back to drive. Tried putting into sport mode but again didn't work. The dash showed that it was in sport mode but that didn't make it move, it just revved. I also have a transmission fault message. Do I have the same problem as raised in this topic?

Just about got it home.

Would anyone know a good lr specialist in the leicester area to sort this. I hear there is someone on the forum who offers a mobile mechanic service?

Many thanks

Mines just jumped out of drive. I've attacked the bush with wd40 oil and slapped some grease around it as a temp fix.

Does anyone know if there is any adjustment that can be made to the cable or is it just a case of making sure you get the new lever in the same place as the old one?

Just tring to gather info before I do the job properly.

Thanks

Not sure about the adjustment in the mechanisim, but, I would personally doubt if there is any adjust at all, as the shift in the gear box is very precise and therefore the lever an conection to the rod assembly must be reassembled in exactly the same position [ok within a nats] at the very least. A small bit out and gear box error comes up on the screen so I had to get closer to realign to my scribe mark.

OK thanks for that.

I take it the shaft on the gearbox doesnt have detents? Can you turn it by hand and feel the different positions? It just seems that at the moment mine is only just going into drive, even though it is moving smothly enough now I have cleaned it and freed it off without removing it. I wondered if there was any way to make sure when the gear lever is in drive that the shaft is definitely in the right place.

I presume there must be some official method of setting it all up after say a gearbox exchange or cable replacement.

had the linkage/other parts replaced a week ago by stealer, drove ace with brilliant pick-up, however after the gearbox learnt my driving style, yesterday morning in -2 temp bleeding thing started to do it again ie at a standstill waiting for traffic lights to change (in drive with foot on brake), moved off, foot down car went forward but had to rev to 2000-2300 rpm before it would change up to 2nd but not matching the road speed, bit like a clutch slipping on a manual box Big Cry

repeated this on 2-3 occassion whilst on a detour to the stealer (15 miles), then service manager went out in him to replicate, bleedin thing would not replicate the symptoms Banging Head

fine for the rest of the day after I assume the gearbox oil had come up to temp,

Now planning an alternative approach before we start talking "gearbox removal" Shocked

Are you sure the linkage is in the right place?

Auto boxes do need to warm up before they shift properly, is it doing this every morning?

was fine last week as the weather was mild, first time its done it since the cold weather, going to replace the whole gearbox leaver/cable coz I'm fed up of messing about, cost me £600 a day having him off the road in the stealers so worth making a reasonable investment to solve the problem asap Big Cry
