Disco3 Inferno
A couple we met on a trip to Googs Track and the Flinders Rangers in Sept 2007 sent the following email and photos:
On the way back down the WA coast last September, our friends came across this sad scene. With others, they managed to drag the caravan away from the doomed LR (Ian said he wasn't sure if diesel exploded!)
They bumped into the couple weeks later near Esperance, who had a brand new LR, courtesy of the insurance company, with the same caravan behind.
Does anyone know any details of this incident???'S' TDV6, Air suspension, Terrain Response, Active rear diff, Safari Snorkel, Opposite Lock rear wheel carrier, OL drawer system, Cargo Barrier, Dual batteries with Rotronics isolator, GME 3440 UHF. Codan NGT HF, Asus UMPC running TrackRanger. Cooper LT245/70R17 STTs when off-road. Tow Ultimate off-road camper.
Yes. They had some kind of cooler/fridge plugged in in the rear of the D3 and had packed too much stuff, including clothes, around it.
The cooler overheated and caught fire. The rest is history.Have a nice day!

Pic sure looks like fire in engine bay
Another one goes up in flame, first pic shows only flame in front .
Time to make sure insurance is all up to date and purchase a lotto ticket just to be sure
Cheers

Could be that an overheated and burning cooler might quickly cause a short-circuit, leading to a battery fire (in the front). Hmmm, time to check that I did indeed install the proper fuse in the 2nd battery leads to the cooler Jim Dowell - D4 HSE TDi, 12,000 hydraulic winch & hidden winch mount, MTRs, TyreDog, Traxide 2 x aux battery system, fixed air compressor, Dolium roof rack, MitchHitch.

I have heard this story on another forum, except then it was LR in Perth who supposedly supplied a new vehicle "without Questions".
While the pictures look real enough I doubt the whole story in the e-mail ; ie Saw them a couple of weeks later with a new landrover.
Not much time for an insurance company to pay up and order a new LR!!!
We know from Rob Bruce that once you have a car go up in flames it takes some convincing to get back in one.
Beware e-mails from friends of friends of friends of grey nomads.

The incident did happen and was written up in the local rag. It wasn't grey nomads, but a family with kids.
I don't know about how long it took to get a new car though, as that wasn't reported.
And it was started by the cooler. It is lilkely that it did travel back to the battery as it was probably plugged into the rear outlet and the draw was too great as it got smothered by the gear around it.
Unfortunately the internet is a bit like New Idea. Folks copy a couple of pics and then make up a story around them.Have a nice day!

All very interesting, even though the wiring overheated back to the battery, fuses should have blown, if fited
Secondly with all that hot flamable plastic is it no wonder it caught fire
It is beyond me why Australian desighn rules dont have flamability standards.
Cheers

Oh yeah - I didn't mean they were grey nomads in the car, I meant the ones who sent IanR the e-mail. Ye olde Nomads think the Nigerian Heir-to-a-fortune is their friend because he sent an e-mail to their e-mail address.2012 MY13 SDV6 SE D4 Ipanema Sand with Almond leather

I had a fire in my XY once. there was a substandard power wire to the radio. The wire caught fire along it's entire length.
Luckily I had an extinguisher.Have a nice day!

If the car wireing did not run next to flamable plastic etc the wire would disintergrate and no serious fire would start.
Think I am turning into anty plastic mode
Come to think of it there is not much you can purchase these days that is not plastic or part plastic
Cheers
