Hi All,
I have had a problem with poor radio reception for some time. I sort of accepted this as a poor radio signal in my area and a poor radio in the D3.
However, in the last few weeks I discovered with the cold weather that whenever I put the heated rear window on the reception severely worsened.
As the car was going in for a service I asked them to look at it and now have the answer!
It appears that the rear window tint is causing the problem. The only fix is to have the window replaced and the tint redone! Fortunately this is being done under warranty as the garage had the tint done for me.
I will try and find out if it is a specific type of tint when I pick the car up tomorrow and let you know.
Best regards
Chris

I had this.
Mine wasn't to do with tinting but was a break in the rear screen lines. From memory the radio uses the rear screen heater element for reception.
New screen cured it

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the input. Interesting and will see what, if anything they say when I pick it up. Useful information if only to let the sales department know that it may have nothing to do with the tint so the cost should not be borne by them!
Regards

That should be easy to prove, just peel the tint off. You should be able to do it without much trouble. Cannot see why they would change the whole window if it was just down to the tint! MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Hi Russell,
Because the tint needed replacing.
It seems you guys were correct and the tint had damaged the heated rear window. They have now fitted a tinted window!

From memory I believe the rear heated screen has nothing to do with the radio. The radio aerial is the elements in the rear quarter lights, but I can't remember which side - I'm sure someone will come along to confirm which. LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

I believe you are right and it is on the offside.
However, they said it would fix the radio to replace the rear screen and it did!

That could explain my problem, I too have poor reception with heated screen active. Only happened since the rear tint was changed due to damage.
Never made the connection before now (excuse the pun), will go back to dealer and get it sorted. They will no doubt try and fob me off as it will be an expensive fix, anyone know 100% that the rear screen has the radio antenna within?? 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Somehow I knew you or TFC would clarify this - thanks. LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Aha! It has a diversity tuner to pick the best signal from either the rear screen or the side window , needing BOTH (UK spec seems to have the middle circuit connected, off-side window). The others are for AM / TV / FM in foreign places, apparently. 2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods
