My wife's 2005 Disco3 is in the dealers today having the hand brake looked at because it makes an awful screeching sound when it is driven off. I see that there are a couple of threads here about hand brakes and wondered whether this is a common problem?
The Disco has never been off road but does a lot of town driving full of kids!! It only has 4700miles on it. 8)

HI mate
I posted a question about this a while ago. One of tha answers that came back was posssibly trapped dirt on the rear discs. I read this but waited weeks of squeeling before doing anything about it. While I was jet washing the car for the second time in seven months I gave the rear discs a really good blast. Touch wood no more squeeling.

There's a TSB relating to exactly this fault, LA206-002
Vin range: 5A300167-6A357844
"A customer may report a concern of a squeal or clicking noise, or of excessive brake dust coming from one or both of the rear brake hubs"
The problem relates to the park brake shoe retaining pins / clips coming adrift

Sorry, excuse my ignorance but what is a TSB? Am not sure of the vehicle VIN without going out to it, but it was built Apr/May 05.

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin, a LR document mainly for dealers. Even if your VIN is outside of those listed, your dealer should rectify as it's a known issue

Does the Technical Service Bulletin include the fitment of modified parts that should now give a permanent solution rather than a minor adjustment.
I had work done a couple of months ago on park brake to cure squealing noise when reversing. However, two weeks ago had further problems with park brake that resulted the vehicle having to be recovered. Would like to think this is a permanent solution. As replacement park brake shoes were in high demand (i.e large number of vehicles effected) they were on back order with supplier.
Hopefully dealer should receive park brake shoes on Monday (if not already received) which should allow me to get vehicle back on Tuesday.

Zig, the TSB relates to the fitting kit for the shoes, and the shoes themselves. It was released on 17th October 2005 so the dealers should be up to speed with it by now 
The part number for the kit, containing the retention clips and brake shoes is SFS500012
|

I believe I had my Park brake fixed for the first time after the 17th October 2005 but I can not be sure and they may have done a quick fix which did not work.
This time round I should get the modified parts. However, they seem to be in very high demand and I am still waiting for them to arrive at the dealers with the vehicle being unusable for over 2 weeks.

Just notice the same thing happening on my 05HSE. Seems to be intermitent ie when I first drive off it squeals but then stops. After the first initial squeal, not matter what I do I can't get it to repeat the noise. Could this be something other than what the TSB is refereing to ie Rusty discs or mud/dirt around the calipers?
I am due for my first service in the next 6 weeks, do you think it is safe to wait until then for the dealer to inspect? 2017 Disco5 First Edition(On Order)

My recommendation would get modified park brake and fittings fitted as soon as possible rather than wait. On my vehicle the leading edge of the park brake lining was found to be coming away from the shoe.
Make sure the dealer has as complete set of the modified park brake and fittings in stock, as they are in high demand and in my case they were on back order from supplier resulting in a prolonged period without the vehicle.

Or ,as I did, you can get a French Hotel to by-pass the entire handbrake system  :-
You ask for your car to be brought round to the front of the bijou chateaux that you and HID have slipped away to for a spot of r&r. You pay your bill and with your luggage already packed by le petit homme you walk out to find several German tourists laughing themselves silly as your £30k plus super machine is held on the hill by the application of a brick under each wheel.The french garcon giving the ou est la park-brake routine
never fails, squeaks, or slips  Alive and kicking..who's round is it anyway ??

My D3 developed this same awful squeal a couple of weeks ago, but only if the car was driven forwards from parked; reversing first wouldn't cause it.
My local dealership was aware of this particular problem, and the necessary work was done without any problems.
However -  - I have noticed that my average mpg has now climbed from sub 24, to a much more respectable 29?!?!?! Has anyone else experienced this same "side-effect"? It's done about 7000 miles, and I reset the cpu about once a week. My driving style has most definately not been altered... 8)

I'm presuming you have an auto, or left the car parked with the handbrake off- otherwise the numpty would have driven round to the front with the handbrake on!
At least - if he couldn't find the handbrake - then it would come on automatically when he took the key out of the ignition.
The 'quirky' handbrake is one (excuse) reason why I've not added my parents to the insurance... Discovery 3 tdv6 7 seat Buckingham Blue
