Drive shaft dust seal

I have started dismantling rear hubs so I can get my extremely rotten disc shields replaced.
Upon separating the hub from the drive shaft, I noticed there was some kind of metal dust shield left inside the hub which was pressed

onto the drive shaft to keep dirt and debris from entering the toothed ring for the ABS.

Please see my pictures.

My question is, Can this dust shield be purchased on its own or does a whole new drive shaft have to be replaced to put it right?
If it can't be seperataly purchased, how critical is it if I was leaving it out? Has anybody had the same issue as me?
Interested to hear from other members their thoughts on it.
Thanks.

Not available separately. new shaft I'm afraid. If you refit without the shield you risk tearing the wheel bearing seal and you will have to do a much bigger job on your hands.

Having said that, judging by the condition of the knuckle and back plate I'd advise a complete strip down and replace everything as well as thorough clean and rust prevention.

So new shaft, back plate, knuckles x 2, bearing kit, and whatever is needed for the hand brake.

But, you will need a 30 ton press to replace the bearing 20 ton min but expect a fight! Thumbs Up

Hi, Thanks for your reply on this.

New drive shaft it is then.

I have a 20 ton press so bearing replacement should be a breeze!! ( famous last words)

Regards

No new shaft needed

The covers usually fall off and cut through the ABS sensor

Take them off and bin them Thumbs Up

Hi Disco_Mikey,

Thanks for your input.

I did consider running the vehicle without the cover in place as it seemed an unnecessary expense replacing both rear perfectly good driveshafts just for a small cover plate.

I was also thinking of the possibility of turning a new ring on the lathe to fit it, either in aluminium or even delrin.
Couldn't think of any possible consequences of doing this provided it was a tight enough fit especially with some loctite applied and it would also be providing that shielding just as land rover initially intended.

Any thoughts anyone on my idea of this?
