Risultato?
Finally, can anyone who has used 5w40, say whether it has had any contraindications?

A oil with a higher HTHS offers more protection as it provides a higher film thickness, this can only ever be a benefit.
I would never use a C1, C2, C5, B5 spec oil as these can have a HTHS as low as 2.9 pick a C3, C4 or B3, B4 oil if you want to run a 5w30 grade oil.
A 5w40 grade guarantees me a 3.6 minimum HTHS and the VW505.00 specification is ideal for any non DPF car and VW511.00 ideal for any car with a DPF.
The shell Helix ultra I have mentioned and use in my own Disco 4 has some of the most demanding manufacturer specifications.
I use 5w40 in my D3, now she is older and have done for a few years now.

also on 5w40 C3 motorseems to be quieter and i noticed much faster oil pressure than on 30
also not even a tiniest bit of "silver engine dust" in filter over laast two changes so she will go on forever lol

True, I have the scv6. But these oil grade debates are equally important here.
@Mastertech, thank you for your insights. @Gary_P, your mention is a point to ponder as well.
Evidence does show that these elongated oil change schedules were really not helpful. Not to mention that in my case I did not purchase new and that the first recorded oil change occurred after the recommended schedule.
So, I just wish all those at LR would call it out explicitly and we can move on to further discussing the importance of grade. (The significant value of synthetics. And a proper long term spent oil analysis using all useful grades on these engines….)
LR, you made a mistake.
So if you are reading, how about a schedule like this:
Oil and filter change at first 1000 km.
Oil and filter change at 2500 km
Every 5000 after that.
FWIW, as per spec, I am still using the specified WSS-M2C-913B (5w30) however the synthetic version, in the xkr with 170,000 km. Oil consumption between changes is still minimal and never approaches the “add mark”. But the oil changes have been every 5000.
And lets just ignore this nonsense of 15000 km oil changes or anything like that, alltogether.2015 LR4 HSE Lux Aintree Green

Finally, what distinguishes a 5W30 oil from a 5W40 oil? Certain properties linked to their hot viscosity:
5W30 engine oil:
is more liquid when hot, which allows it to circulate more easily between engine parts
is suitable for vehicles equipped with particulate filters (FAP) because it prevents them from clogging
allows you to save fuel
helps limit polluting gas emissions
5W40 engine oil:
is thicker when hot, and therefore makes it easier to seal any cracks
is suitable for vehicles without FAP
suitable for sporty driving and powerful car engines
provides increased protection of the catalyst
is generally less expensive to purchase.Marco.

observations based on my bus:
motor quieter on 5w40
fuel usage who cares if changes by 0.2 MPG up or down lol
amount of more pollution created will see on next MOT

As with my D3 I'm about to put Millers 5w30 C3 into my non DPF D4 as recommended to me by an oil supplier due to its ability to maintain pressure on the bearings (if I understood it correctly). It did as above to my D3, noticeably quieter and the initial tick went away very quickly but maybe that's just due to it being new oil.

If you've not seen the latest youtube clips from LR Time in the last few weeks I would highly recommend them. Especially the ones where Christian is comparing the bearing shells from the 2.7TDV6 and 3.0 SDV6 variants. I have a 2016 gen2 engine and hearing how the oil becomes even more diluted is fascinating.
I've been on 5w40 for a while now changing at an OCD 5k interval just because I like clean oil. My TD5 Defender oil is transparent compared to what comes out of these!
Thanks to Vera and Christian you'll be up there with Mat Armstong very soon with our likes

Hi
See Matt Armstrong has just bought an extremely nice house , justly deserved after all the hard work that he’s done
Likewise as my D3 has just clocked 100k and will be changing it over to 5/40 , will stay with millers oil as been using that for the last 7 x years
Must confess the last video that Christian done went over my head with him going into a lot more engineering detail
