From anecdotal evidences I’ve seen, it seems the ad blue D4s (MY16 from June 2015) are more prone to oil dilution.The service required light on them comes on at about 6.5% oil dilution. My understanding is that this figure calculated by the car (and viewable with an IID) annd is an estimate based on number of failed /partial regents and not oil analysis by the car. Oil level showing overfilled ( if your car was previously filled to capacity and showing OK) is also an indicator.
I have realised that a twice yearly oil and filter change is the way to go. The car pretty much demands that, ignoring a low mileage between services (within reason)if you don’t do a lot of miles. It’s a pain, and not acceptable in a modern car, but a fact of life.
I would always go with manufacturers spec oil by the way.Gary

I have my 2016 LR4 engine replace under 50kmiles because of the bearing and crack crankshaft. Now, it is new engine and turbos under LR warranty for two years. I am finding the way to prevent or extend the life time of the crankshaft. Because it is under warranty , i will only service at LR garage. I raised the issue to them. They insisted 5w40 is too thick for the car.
I real don't know what I can do to avoid the problem again. Prehaps, I can add oil additive at each oil change?
Liqui Moly super diesel additive or Cera Tec.?
I used Cera Tec before when I have tapping noise on my D4. It does lower the noise level.
Anyone knows what can I do?

Your main dealer will only ever recommend what they are told to as they are a franchise that has to follow the manufacturer recommendations.
PSA who jointly designed the engine with Ford recommend 5w30, 5w40 and 10w40 oils. Ford USA in the F150 recommended 5w30 for normal usage and 5w40 for heavy/ arduous usage. Considering the Land Rover ECU tuning runs more power and torque than anyone else, in my personal opinion our vehicles would always fit into an arduous service regime.
The Land Rover time video shows PSA also recommending 0w40 for colder climates and 15w40 for hotter climates!
Look at Fiat, they put the 3.0 CRDI Ecodiesel in the Dodge ram and spec’d it for 5w30, they were having bottom end failures and their fix was using 5w40! This engine is a very close copy of our Lion v6 just with a timing chain.
Audi makes a 3.0 v6 turbo petrol engine. UK oil spec is for 0w20, in Canada the same engine is spec’d for 5w40. This is solely because of the emissions requirements of individual countries.
However, I can put my tuppence worth in regarding fuel dilution. I send a sample of every used batch of oil off for analysis and in my experience of 25 (ish) samples I can inform you all categorically that my D4 which has mixed use driving conditions (hours long drives at 60 ish plus many short journeys on A, B and off-road) that oil change intervals of 6000 miles will keep fuel dilution below 1.5%.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m thinking that the dilution levels in the Adblue version may well be more than 1.5% in this scenario.
Also interested to know more about how the oil analysis works.

Maybe all engines in F1 should be the 3.0l engine next season & see what oil works!

hi. i have read this thread a few times still confused
i use 5w 40 but wanted to use a more premium oil.
can anyone actually specifie something or a link
or what is say a castrol or motul equivelent to the vag
