Is this engine temperature normal?
Good afternoon all.
I've been driving my 2005 TDV6 D3 for a few years without concern about engine temperature, but a passenger the other day asked my why the engine appeared to be running cool.
As below, my needle never reaches horizontal, it has always consistently reached the below height. Is this height normal for a TDV6? All my other cars seem to have their temperature guages calibrated to show that 'normal' operating temperature is pretty much perfectly horizontal in the middle of the gauge.
The engine appears to run perfectly, recent service, new injectors, filters etc. Its always been like this since I got her.

Mine runs just about horizontal, but I'm sure they are not calibrated the same. A bit of variation is acceptable.Richard

in the eight or so years ive owned my d3 the needle has sat in the middle of the scale pointing at the arrow on the fuel gauge (obviously when fully warmed up)
could be any number of reasons that its reading lower and without knowing the full history of the vehicle it going to be a case of changing parts until you resolve it or leave it alone if your happy with the temp it reaches please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

Thanks all, already it seems like a mixed bag of opinions. I wonder if the Gap IID tool has a temperature readout on it, so that I can determine whether it is cool or whether it is the gauge that is poorly calibrated.
I'll report back once I've done that.2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

You should be able to read the engine temperature with the IID. You certainly can on the V8. This is just my opinion but unless the dial is really horizontal you’ve got a problem with the engine temperature… I speak of the V8 now, perhaps the diesel is different. The dial is also very insensitive, and it was designed by JLR to be such.

Thanks Kajtzu, I've put the car to bed now until next weekend, so I'll have a look at the Gap tool next Saturday.2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

IIRC there is/was a TSB relating to this, the resolution was to change the thermostat from a 91deg. C. to a 94deg. C.
Doesn't seem a lot but bear in mind the thermostat is at the bottom of the engine on hoses, not at the top of the engine where the temperature is measured.

I have a TDV6 D3 and when fully warm it's horizontal. However, at the moment it takes an age to get there and really only happens if I go on a decent enough motorway run. These cars take forever to warm up especially in these temps.
Doesn't seem like anything to be concerned about though...I imagine there's many other more significant faults just around the corner

It shouldn't take more than 2-3 minutes driving to reach working temperature, suggests a faulty thermostat. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I've driven 4 miles in busy traffic across town, 20 mins in total and my temp hasn't fully warmed up still... always like this in winter.
As I've said though, a motorway run would raise the temp and the needle would be horizontal

I'd be more concerned about the faulty reading from the fuel gauge if you driven more than two miles and it's still saying full I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Where does your needle sit when the engine is off?It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
