I've driven 4 miles in busy traffic across town, 20 mins in total and my temp hasn't fully warmed up still... always like this in winter.

As I've said though, a motorway run would raise the temp and the needle would be horizontal

What model trim is that? My 2005 HSE tdv6 doesn't have the headlight symbol illuminated...

Needle drops to the bottom when the engine is off and the trim on mine is a 2007 TDV6 GS model.

well better than closing to red zone inint?

One of my pet hates with the D3. If you had low screen wash level, you got the loud bong and lots of warning messages. Well one. If the engine temp was too high you got a very vague red light and needle went up. No bongs and no big warning messages. Almost as if they wanted you to cook your engine. Whistle Whistle

That's because you have the (unused & disabled) Timed preheat symbol in that position, the sidelight telltale was introduced with the 07MY instrument pack.

Thanks for clearing that up. Suddenly wondered if maybe I have a dashboard light failure.
