Black Trim Restorer

Hi.

Has anyone got any recommendations for a good product to restore the faded black trim (bumpers, wheel arches etc) back to a nice deep black on a Discovery 3?

Many Thanks

Type the words “peanut butter” into the forum search engine. Amongst the results will be several threads about trim restoration.

Honestly! Thumbs Up

It’s a good search term but please don’t feed the animals with peanut butter Laughing Laughing

Gtechniq C4 is what I have used sometimes… what happens varies. In best case it looks good for a while. In worst case you just make the grey show even more. My headlight washers were faded and completely gray. In the end I gave up with all the magic potions and purchased new ones that were painted Cairns Blue instead. Been happy since. Whistle

I swear by the B&Q Gloss Boiled linseed Wood oil, 500ml (c. £6). It lasts for about 6 months, doesn’t seem to attract any animals either.

You could remove them and spray with black Raptor. (Though you may find a dark grey looks better - proper black looks a little odd in my view.)

Boiled linseed oil is really good and seems to last a little while. WD40, 3in1 and similar oils will give a temporary improvement.

I have some Carpro Perl which gets good reviews, not used it yet but I think it is promising. The other product I have used is Dodo Juice Supernatural Glaze. I don't know how well it restores colour but on reasonably good plastics it is very good. I have used Swissvax Pneu a long time ago and is also a very good product.

I would say that for a cheap, quick hit of plastic improvement, boiled linseed oil is the best bet.

Peanut butter does work but essentially faded plastic needs feeding with oil. The fading is caused by UV damage which causes the plastic to lose its oils. Heating with a heat gun is also another method of improving faded plastic but I have found this option is short lived and requires care not to overheat the plastic.

Hope that helps.
