I thought I would just tidy up the loose ends on this thread.
1. I eventually bought the maltings electrics loom, which was fairly straightforward to fit. It took all morning, and there were some fiddly bits - feeding the cables under the car, across the rear bumper - but, all in all, it was something with which most DIYers should be comfortable.
2. With regard using the Disco 3/4 towball without the key: I was panicking needlessly - you can actually prime the towball without the key. When I realised this is possible, this is what I did, and so one as able to fit it to car, and I then removed the towball when I got home and had access to the key again.
