Advanced factors lower column

Morning all! Need a new lower column and would like to know if the advanced factors lower column has been ok? I know people say for genuine, but the car is an infrequently used cheap motor and if the advanced factors one will do the job.

I bought genuine LR, and it was rubbish. First one had been machined incorrectly. Had to exchange it for another.

The rack end internal spline was wrong. The clamp bolt couldn't close the gap enough for the spline to grip the steering rack shaft.

Fitted the Bearmach lower column from AF last week and been fine, no issues so far and way way improved.

Update on this! Car has done just under 300 miles since fitting the lower column. Guess what, that’s right the low quality component has developed play in the sliding joint! I’m not happy as it means I’ll now neee to mess about getting a genuine one and getting a refund! Begs the question why anyone sells the cheaper option as they are quite obviously not fit for purpose! Phone call to advanced factors imminent! Anyone got a decent contact for a genuine one?

Duckworth LR will sort you out.

I've seen some really dangerous aftermarket ones, from the simple 1/3rd out top to bottom alignment, no lubrication on the sliding parts, loose rivets on the insulator, to a Chinese one (seen three examples of it) with the rubber insulator being too soft.... turn the wheel, nothing, turn a bit more, still nothing, turn - and all of a sudden the steering turns, the rubber stretches, then springs back. The reseller wasn't interested in it being considered dangerous, but was more than happy to get them collected, presumably to stop any trading standards involvement.

In my view, having worked on automotive, commercial and now agriculture engineering, I feel these lower columns are unsafe and shouldn’t be sold! The vague steering is unnerving.

Sounds a real false economy. Last place you want too much play or softness. A well sorted D3/4 has really good steering feel. Much better than most newer cars with electric power steering. Don’t spoil it!

They seem to have got the hang of pricing, rather than being 'too cheap to be any good', they're seling them for 50-60% of dealer prices, presumably on the basis that people will think they're OEM without the LR sticker - in reality, it's the same sh*t, just with a higher markup.
Personally, anything that keeps you on the bit of road you want to be on (tyres, brakes, steering, suspension), is worth the cost to get the absolute best you can afford.

I almost went down the aftermarket route. But loads of comments and research put me right. It is rare for a genuine LR column to be wrong, I think. Anyway now have genuine fitted and no more clucking etc. plus dealer did a deal and I got it for £230 Inc VAT
