Since getting a genuine part that was made correctly, it's now been in use for 3 years or more without issue.Richard

I've just fitted an 'OEM' lower column (although not from AF), and it does fit the steering rack shaft snugly and gets the job done, but the shaft blocks part of the bolt hole so the proper bolt can't be used and therefore the fact it's threaded on the other side is now pointless...
I've managed to use a different bolt with a nut on the other side and it's now attached securely and the steering is fine so I'm happy that in this case there's no immediate safety issues, but as others have said steering is one of the important bits so worth paying the money to get it right and I may well be looking for a genuine replacement in the near future... A shame as the rest of it was perfectly good quality...

Hi wdavison98, I too had this issue, however with a bit of persuasion the column end does fit completely on the shaft. The cutout on the shaft is to accommodate the bolt. It will line up. The reason I presume is too hold the column on the shaft if the bolt loosens. I would give it another go. 👍

Ah okay, interesting. Maybe I was too quick to judge as I was doing various other jobs at the same time so probably wasn't very patient with it... To be fair I was surprised when it didn't fit as it seemed to be a quality part, but I hadn't realised there was a cutout in the shaft for the bolt.
Thanks for the info, I'll have another go and see how I get on
