Annual insurance merry-go-round - again |
|
House and my car insurance up in next couple of weeks.
Get renewal for the house contents and its gone from £306 to £351, so about 15% increase. Quick look on internet comparison sites shows I can get same cover for £310 but I have to ring current insurer to stop the auto-renew process.
Usual 20 questions and I have a little moan when they suggest they can price match about why they don't just give me their best price to start with. So they 'take a look' and all of a sudden its now going to be £287, so fallen in price over last year. That was worth ringing up for
Same with my private car insurance, renewal comes in at £429 and was £422 'equivalent' last year. I would go with that but think it looks a bit expensive, hard to tell last years equivalent premium as I changed car twice during the period. Another quick online check and I can get it for £275. My son asks if he can pay the additional premium and go on it as well (emergency back-up really as he's gone back to driving 'old bangers') so add him on and premium is now £348.
Ring current insurer to say "don't auto renew" and the same old conversation round robin begins. They can't improve their quote they say and pretty much say they don't believe I've got the quotes I've had.....
Go online to take up the insurance quote I have had, forgot my son had had a second 'non-fault' accident so add that on expecting price to go up a bit and it actually goes down a few pounds Same again I confirm the renewal date that is a couple of weeks further away than I first thought when I got quotes and.........it goes down again (I know there is an algorithm used that slowly increases prices closer to renewal date you get). Final premium is £332.64. Cover is exactly the same but excess has gone from £150 to £250 and windscreen replacement is now £125 and was £100 before. A 'high street' brand too not one of these places you've never heard of before.
Motorbike insurance 'fun' next to come......

I just switch when they try this price stuff...no point trying to keep me after you shafted me!
Apparently there is a window prior to renewal to get the absolute best price Mike

He does very good value advice, if that is discounted I’m not sure that matters his prices are good and he tells you what you’re getting for your money. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

I have historically always done that, and when they offer to "price match" it does my head in; I want your best quote first time and not a price match, too late as I've already found someone else by then!
However I have seen a change last few times to actually attempt to salvage a deal, as per my home insurance this time round, still does my head in but better than previous way of dealing with 'important customers'

If quoting online which comparison sites etc then yes the earlier the better - specialist insurers however it won't really effect. So if you're on a modified policy or a specialist 4x4 one then your price is unlikely to change over the 30 days you can quote before the renewal date.

Daughters insurance renewal with Admiral arrived about 3 weeks ago, premium increased by 5% even though another years NCB and a year older (wiser???) which was originally through one of the comparison sites.
Tried a few comparison sites which came in a little lower.
One day before her renewal date i tried Admiral site directly and received a quote approx. 15% lower than renewal quote, so i saved it so my daughter could get onto the site and renew the next day as she was working.
Unfortunately due to work commitments she couldn't renew in time so her insurance lapsed so she couldn't drive into work so i dropped her off.
We sat down yesterday and i tried to retrieve the quote but the Admiral system was freezing.
I decided that to circumvent it we should fill in again for another quote for her for that very day.
The quote came in nearly £200 lower than the first quote i had got, which threw me a little as i was wondering what we had put differently or wrongly, so we went through it again in detail but all the details were correct.
Accepted the quote and paid in full.
Saved over 30% even though it was a faff, but worth it.
I think even these algorithims have bad days.

Had exactly the same with house insurance. For what ever reason I forgot the renewal & it lapsed. Rang later and , told it will be a new policy. Went through all the questions & it was a lower premium and better conditions!

when I my LV renewal was due up last March they upped the premium by almost £300 and windscreen excess by almost £100 (I actually needed a new windscreen too)
Went on Meerkats and Admiral came back cheaper than my previous year with LV so I decided to go with them
Then somebody suggested to try the other comparison sites and Go Compare came back with an Admiral quote that was even cheaper than their Meerkats quote, as well as free £250 excess cover. So I switched to Admiral via Go Compare.
LV didn't even really bother to offer much retention discount.
Moral of the story - not only go on comparison sites to compare but also compare the comparison sites 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten
