2014 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Aintree Green

Rust Cleanup/Prevention

Need to sort out the rust that's developing on the rear bumper/towing electrics bracket.
My plan of attack is:

Any further suggestions re procedure or paint choice?

2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Tonga Green

I would avoid using any paint or underseal type product. Anything that holds moisture against bare steel will promote rust. Mud and salt are the worst culprits.

Lanoguard gets my vote. It's not pretty, but it is effective with annual treatment. Chris

I tidied this area up on my old D3……I spent a lot of time cleaning the area up using wire wheels on air tools and a number of different kinds of sanders, I then undercoated using two coats of Red lead followed by two or three coats of black Hammerite. It looked new until I sold it nearly two years later. Discovery 4 HSE SDV6

Thanks everyone for hints and tips

I definitely intend to spend some time cleaning it all up. I don't have any air tools but plenty of wire brushes for my drill and the Dremel for nooks & crannies.

Hoping that I can unbolt the metal bumper under the plastic work to work on it away from the vehicle. Discovery 4 HSE - Aintree Green

2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Auto Bonatti Grey

I'd highly recommend getting a cheap 230v grinder with knotted wire cups, I found these much better than the drill. The rear cross member is welded unfortunately so not removable, but with the plastic bumper off there's lots of room to work at it. I used Buzzweld rust encapsulator undercoat with Hammerite on top.

You're welcome. Good luck, it's not difficult just a bit messy and can be tiring cleaning underneath holding up the grinder.

I did it in preparation for fitting a rear wheel carrier, the hardest part was getting the bumper back on once the carrier was on! Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

Because the rust comes back through within a week of doing it. Better products out there.
