Hiya folks
2015 D4 with 158k, full history. Started using a litre of coolant a week. No visible leaks, car runs fine. Local garage reckons there's traces of exhaust gas in the coolant.
Head gasket failure looks likely, but there seems to be no track record of these engines failing in this way. Is there anything else which might be the culprit?

Well, a litre a week is quite a lot, (how many miles in a week ?)….other possibilities, (assuming D4 is similar to D3)…. EGR COOLERS, ie. egr gasses are cooled by coolant fed heat exchangers close to each egr valve. There is the possibility of exhaust gasses leaking into the coolant / vice versa, at one, or both of these if faulty. Similar heat exchanger for auto transmission fluid as well ie ( the radiator)….. is the auto transmission fluid being contaminated with coolant ??? D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

Ok thanks, that's useful. EGR coolers seems the most likely, but I did get a random 'refusal to proceed' the other week while in D. I had to put it into P and then back in to D. Not reoccurred.
Weekly miles = 100 or so, mainly local running about.

Only 100 miles a week Tbh I was expecting you to say many more than that. To lose a litre of coolant in 100 miles seems excessive for a heat exchanger type leak. Are you sure there are no external leaks ? D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

No external leaks, no smell of coolant after a run, nothing. I've got it booked in to a local discussion who reckons is the EGR coolers. Keep you posted.

How about something simple like a coolant expansion bottle lid not sealing ? Coolant would probably bubble out and evaporate . Gary
