Gearbox Issues - Stuck in Park - SORTED

D4 with the 6 speed auto, everything working normally until; Gearbox fault on dash, thumps when putting in D or R, put it in P and switched it off.

Wouldn't start and dash said it was not in P, but you couldn't move the gear lever.

Had just about every electrical circuit fault codes, nearly all due to 'loss of signal'.

Changed the brake switch and all problems go away.

The next day, put it in P again, Gearbox fault on dash, but able to put it in D or R, but thumped in.

Eventually had to put it in P, and then although it would stop and start OK, couldn't get it out of P.

Cleared the many faults, and it all went back to normal again, and for the last 2 days, not an issue.

Battery is a one month old VARTA AGM, 12.2v engine off but vehicle going through its checks, and 14.3v with engine on tickover just after starting.

As the problem appears to go away with simple fault clearing, it would appear to be an electrical fault rather than mechanical.

Any ideas of where to look please, and also, this only manifests itself when going into park, but could problems arise whilst travelling?

Many thanks in advance.

The thump is because the transmission is in a limphome mode where maximum line pressure is applied to protect the clutches (no slip). It could be oil in the connector to the gear box, it could be any number of things. It could even be an issue with the engine as the transmission will need accurate signals to be able to change gear correctly.

An update on this, and further questions.

As the problem persists, it is now apparent it only happens when things are warm, today for instance, using my IID, once the gearbox temperature reached 74c, special functions and HDC not available on dash, stop and put it in P, and it wouldn't fire up or able to take it out of P for about 2 hours. I was parked on a slight slope which might not have helped.

I have changed the TCCM, which made no difference.

Although it seems 100% electrical, the fact that things have to get warm and take too long for an electrical unit to cool down, we are thinking electrical wires that sit in oil, as in the mechatronic unit.

The transmission place I asked the question of says the only unit he has ever changed was that in a BMW where the driver had been thrashing the car and there was not enough oil in the box. He is willing to change my unit, but is not 100% sure it would fix the problem.

Is there an external park position sensor on the 6 speed unit?

Could a faulty Transfer Box cause these issues?

Thanks

Dave

EDIT - The reason it won't start is because it says it is not in P, which it is.

Thanks M3DPO, seen that before, linkage all OK.

Trawling through various sites and using various search words leads me to believe it needs a new mechatronic unit, the fact that it only happens when the oil is warm/hot indicative of position switches failing, and previous owners of the problem only fixing it with a new unit.

To bring this post to a close, issue was indeed a failed mechatronic unit.

Specifically the Range Selector Switch, which is a non changeable part, unlike the valves.

Thanks to all who contributed.
