Gearbox (automatic) woes…!! |
|
Another day another problem eh!!!
Sorry if this has been mentioned before but…
My D3 seems to be fannying about in the gearbox department (it is an automatic by the way).
In first it takes ages to change up and also it jolts quite badly when driving at a low speed and it changes down (from second to first I’d imagine)…
Also it doesn’t seem to want to go into reverse properly all the time (it just rolls when reverse is selected as though there is no drive at all)!!!
Can any of you lovely people help/advise or point me in the right direction??!!
This car is just refusing to be a car!!
Thank you all so much in advance.

First thing todo is to get the oil level checked. Any history on any gearbox servicing?

Absolutely squat-diddly...!!!
To be honest I do not think the car was lavished in care before we got it (hence the never ending stack of repair invoices that keep piling up)!
I doubt the gearbox has ever received any attention at all...

How many miles has it done?
No service history at all? By now it should have had belts changed, and hopefully a new oil pump.
I would start by reading the codes, and having solved any issues revealed consider a gearbox oil change:-

There is some service history but I cannot see anything with regards to the gearbox...
I do think that this car has been neglected during its life!
Not ideal when it comes to these motors!!! If at first you don't succeed it's obviously not meant to be!!!

Check the selector pivot on the side of the gearbox. Could be stiff causing failure to get reverse? As said, an oil change will do no harm , except to your wallet!

100% check or just replace the shift linkage. Mine was doing very similar to your and after weeks of worry and a gearbox oil change I replaced the link. It was about £25 for the part and it took me under an hour to fit, totally cured the issue.
The old linkage LOOKED ok, no visible corrosion and my car is very low miles, but when I removed it it was binding up towards the end of its movement.
PS In my defence at assuming the worst re oil change, a week or so before I got stuck in a ditch and was worried id cooked the oil trying to get out. Silly, but there you go. Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2
