The burning smell was probably your clutch. There are a few cases of failed clutches on here. Some early vehicles have a problem with the clutch material, and are covered by a warranty claim. Some have had to argue quite hard with Land Rover to get it replaced though.
However, you trailer sounds like it has faulty brakes. Every trailer/caravan I have towed has auto release reversing brakes. They should not impede the reversing manuever for more than a brief moment, then they should release.

some older trailers (i have two)that have a lock out catch whitch you have to manualy set before you do any reverseing, it may be worth having a look

Agree with J Moore ...I did the very same thing with my D2 and my nieces horsebox several years ago ...while I was trying to reverse it the weight of the trailer was activating the trailer brakes ....only after 10 minutes of struggling and a smokey clutch did my niece ay " oh you need to put this on" .... there was a locking pin that went through the trailer towing bar to lockout the brakes 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Just got my D3 back after 2 weeks at the stealers.
Clutch and flywheel replaced plus cylinders.
Classic problem of clutch melting and needing replacement (TSB 308-001)
Mine gave the same symptoms manoeuvering on a very steep slope, then even on the flat. Does your VIN fall within the range?
Had no problem towing since and gear selection much better!!!!
Hope it's just your trailer brakes "its probably a virus, you'll be right as rain in a few days and if you're playing sport try to favour the other leg"

guys, been said quite a few times already in other clutch related posts, but with a manual D3 ALWAYS, ALWAYS use low range when low speed manouvering with a trailer on the back.

my problem arose whan carrying nothing but the added extra weight of a 1 year old baby!
always use low ratio at low speed/ off road when I tow "its probably a virus, you'll be right as rain in a few days and if you're playing sport try to favour the other leg"

I tow an Ifor Williams HB505 and experienced problems with brakes engaging in reverse. A can of WD40 on the brake cable linkages and a grease gun on the tow coupling did the trick. If in doubt take your trailer to your local IW dealer and get him to check it out - it's cheaper than a LR clutch replacement! Most modern trailers will not allow you to temporarily disengage the auto reverse mechanism.
