Disco 4 Brake upgrade - ? Brembo
Hi
What is the best solution to upgrade the front brakes on a 2012 Discovery 4 XS.
I have been looking at the Brembo option (2nd hand) Which ones would fit without issue

I found that a worthwhile upgrade from stock was to fit new disks and EBC Greenstuff pads. Much better than I had hoped for.D1 300Tdi - gone
D2 Td5 ES (Alive remapped...mmm) - sadly gone

Sorry its a duff photo, but i can't reccomend the brembo upgrade enough.
I first did the rear larger disc upgrade with stainless hoses all round, then did the brembo front upgrade with ebc greenstuff pads. The other thing which i think makes as much of a difference as upgrading the calipers is changing the brake booster for a range rover sport one - the three things honestly make the brakes as effective as a decent car half the weight - i had a skoda octavia VRS and my brother a golf GTI and i would put the uprated discovery brakes on par with them.

I've got the Brembo front setup.
Very good with EBC discs and pads.
Use the Search function on here, some cracking guides and part number lists..

One question i have is could the big brembo brakes and 380mm discs fit on the back wheels? - i.e. could i get another set of parts and put them on the rear of my disco too?
I dont know if any of the tech wizards on here would know?

Most of your braking efficiency is gained from the front wheels as mass moves forward over the front wheels when braking, hence 99% of cars have bigger brakes on the front than the rear.
I think all you'll end up doing is locking up the back wheels every time you try and brake hard (giving you less control not more).I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

I can’t see why anyone would want to upgrade well maintained D4 brakes I consider mine to be perfect, after all they are larger diameter than a V8 RR.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

after towing 3-4 tons with my disco on standard brakes on hilly roads or travelling around with a loaded vehicle without a trailer i decided that i would do whatever i could that was on the market to upgrade the brakes! - what i have done works very well and It was more out of interest if brembos fitted on the rear too.

It shouldn’t make any difference what weight you are towing although 4ton is pushing it a bit with a Disco if the trailer brakes are up to scratch It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

If you upgrade your headlight bulbs, intercooler hoses, suspension bushes, brake pads etc., yet decry anyone who upgrades their brakes, are you not just a hypocrite?
The upgrade gives better braking, end of.
I have done both my RRS and Disco commercial which is used for towing for my business, and both give improved braking and with less effort and longer pad life, what is there not to like.

I don't think anyone was saying don't upgrade your brakes, the question asked was "is could the big Brembo brakes and 380mm discs fit on the back wheels?" and no-one has so far said whether this is physically possible, what was being discussed was the merits of actually doing this given that most braking efficiency comes from the the front brakes.
Completely agree that upgrading the front brakes is something that can be worthwhile if your use of the car is such that you need more stopping power (towing very heavy loads on a regular basis for example) and the Brembo upgrade done is great way to go... but M3DPO was making the point that for most uses the standard brakes (with the right pads) are perfectly acceptable.
And obviously any mods to the brakes will have to be declared to your insurance company.I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Also does some thought need to be given to the matter of brake bias? Balance between front and rear braking power is a very finely tuned thing, so if the front brakes are being upgraded on their own, does some very careful adjustment of the bias need doing?
Heavy braking around a corner in an emergency, for example, requires good control.
Or, does the braking system automatically adjust bias 'on the fly' anyway?2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

I would have thgouht the ABS/ESC system is all down to wheel speed sensors so assisted braking is controlled by wheel speed readings rather than a preset or calculated brake caliper 'squeeze' (for want of a better word)
i have upgraded the back discs and pads to the larger disco 4 v8 ones but i've noticed any detrimental performance.
