Gave it a bloody good clean underneath today and although some muck came off, its not caked in it thankfully. What it revealed is surface rust where the original LR black chassis paint is failing. Nothing too worrying, but I guess they all start like that.

One of the places whos website, it seems, say they follow all the steps mentioned here is the Dinitrol centre up nr Rochdale. They also offer a free 12month check up and touch up’s (on the car!) over the period of time you own it. Seeing Im intending to keep it for quite a while (got a decent spec, low mileage one hopefully with some life in it!, but it cost me!)

Not cheap but its there for 3-4 days (but they provide a loan car in the price) and its 25 miles from me.

Anyone had any experience with them? PM me if you want to keep it under the radar.

Well, I bit the bullet and booked it in at Rochdale. They have had it since Monday and I picked it up this morning. They gave me a loan car to get back and Ive had pictures sent during the process.

I must say Im really impressed with their setup, service and results.

He did say my D4 was very good underneath, but they still went through the full process of removing all wheel arch liners, sill covers, (id took the spare off but they would have done it). It was properly cleaned, dried out, any loose wire brushed off, rust treated inside and out, then clear followed by black treated. All put back together and masking removed.

It looks great, very evenly coated and doesn't actually smell that much. You get to have a good look under it in a clean pit before paying the bill.

They want it back every 12 months for a check up, included in the initial price and no charges going forward for any products used to cover up scrapes and where items are replaced. He did say within reason!! Like if you change the chassis !!(not really relevant on Later LR’s)

When I picked mine up, there was a 2012 RR on the ramp and one waiting outside.

Not the cheapest but Ive had 2 other LR’s done before this professionally and these lot are a country mile ahead

In short, recommended

Hi,

If you don't mind me asking what did it cost? As you know I like you, intend to keep my D3 as long as possible, so have been thinking of getting / doing this too. Rochdale isn't too far for me either. Also, do have any pictures, it'd be nice to see the finished product.
Cheers

Hi,

Hope your sitting down…£1068 inc vat. It made me wince a little but having gone over to see their work, It made me feel a little better.

Yes, you can buy a tonne of wax/converters for that (and people are going to think you could do 4 cars for the price of it!), but having 2 LRs before done at 2 other well known establishments previously, this place does in my opinion, the best job.

He has sent me some pictures as they go through it, will work out how to post them.

But they take you through the whole process, even into the pit to show you whats coming off, the tools and the products (all Dinitrol), the back it up with a yearly service that creates a little rust proofing history, if you like.

Other places were talking £650 -£700 plus vat and saying its good for 5 years. This is for the life you own the vehicle.

Like you, I intend to keep it and so if I look at it as £100 a year, it makes sense to me.

Plus I dont have to get all crapped up, annually!!

The supplying Dealer (lakeland did mine back when I bought it. A few years later, Duckworths did it as part of a service (cost £100). That was 11 years ago now.

Fair bit of surface rust on the body/sill where the wheel arch protector rubs against it. Other than that, a bit of surface rust here and there underneath, but nothing major or worth worrying about...

That is not a bad cost when you consider the level of strip down, cleaning and treating. Mucky job above your head.

I'm going to be doing my own soon as have treated a few cars before but I can see why you might like someone else to do it!

Any pics would be great to see.

Thanks. I was expecting around the £800 mark, so not far off and if they it properly its worth paying a bit more.

Yes, that what I was finding, so the extra that covered the yearly top up made sense

Rustproof Experience

Hi, Just wondering if you still hold the same view Mk1 on the Rochdale garage rustproof service. I am currently investigating getting my '16 plate protected as I was alarmed on the level of rust when I looked under it at the weekend.

Only had it 2 weeks the LR dealer is saying this is just normal...

Thanks.

Hi,

Yes well its certainly holding up well and has been well “washed”
With the recent rains, crossings and cleaning after muddy trips away.

Tbh, most muck seems to hardly stick to the coating, so it still look as the day it was done after a hose pipe sprayed under it when the car gets washed. Its not had its 12 month check yet, but Im not expecting any surprises tbh.

Good thing is, its free (well effectively Ive paid in advance!) if anything needs doing and I dont have to do the masking, get dressed up in painting overalls or scrub it off my face or out of my hair!!

So for now, Im happy with it. I guess the real results will be known in 5 years time!!

Great, thanks for the quick reply I will definitely get a quote from them as it also seems to be the only place i can find in the NW other than a garage near Lancaster that does waxoiling.

As you say its a messy job, really need an outside ramp to steam clean etc.

D4 is mint (i thought) until i looked underneath, my FL2 '08 plate looks better underneath and its had plenty of abuse and not much care over recent years as my workhorse...

What rust I found on mine was only surface, nothing deep or structural.

It just looked like the black chassis paint wasn't up to much, so it had only really gone dull and light rust on the edges. The spare wheel well was prob where it was most noticeable.
