*Transmission Fault - Special Mode Not Available*

Hey again!

So as above, upon starting the car you get this message:

*Transmission Fault - Special Mode Not Available*

I've done some searching around both on here, and on other forums, I tried a new module from eBay and that did not do the trick, I also put a new battery in the car and that also did not deliver!

HDC does work, as does higher and lower suspension.

Other faults with the car include reversing beepers not working.

I'd be grateful for suggestions as to where to look next!

You need to read the fault codes

Hey Lawis, welcome to the forum Smile probably the most common phrase you’ll hear on here is “read the codes”. It’ll help you start to pin down the cause.
If you haven’t got a code reader it’s well worth the spend, will save you £££££’s in trial and error and garage bills.
The faults on these can be caused things you wouldn’t even think of swapping out so reading the codes is a must if you can.

Also use the search on the forum, most faults have been discussed (and mostly fixed) before, as a starter, take a look at this one, similar fault

Thanks guys!

I've got a few actually! But we'll see if any of them work on the Disco!

You need a specfic type of reader to read all the codes on a discovery, a generic code reader will read basic fault codes but may not pick up all of the codes.
Luckily you can get an Autel reader for under £50 if yours doesnt read the codes

Yepp as predicted by you guys, neither of them worked!

My suggestion is give the battery a good charge and the messages will go away. They are just communication checks that don’t complete. Hence pop up. I used to get the messages a lot in the winter or after a series of short journeys. May not fix your problem but a cheap starting point

So I cleared the fault codes with the Autel, and now it works ?! Time will tell if that's a permanent result!

The Autel pays for itself after just one use. Brilliant bit of kit. I always plug mine in and have a play to learn.

I spoke too soon!!
Jumped in the disco this AM and the fault returned!

Battery is new!

Fault codes are:

U0403-94 Invalid data received from transfer case control module
U01 32-87 Lost communication with ride level control module (but this does work)
P01 00-00 mass or volume airflow circuit
P0666-00 Powertrain control module engine control module transmission control module internal temperature sensor circuit

I did try another control module and that did not solve the problem.

🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I know it sounds daft, but check your brake lights. There is a known issue where if the bulb blows such that one of the two elements breaks and contacts the other (effectively joining the brake light and side light circuit together) the vehicle throws a transmission fault. I understand a number of dealers changed gearboxes under warrantee in the early days of the D3 before the problem was discovered......

Interesting! I'll give it a check and see!

My reverse beepers also don't work and so ordered a new loom for the rear, will check all wiring on rear end and see what's what!

Thanks,

Lewis

Just had a thought,
On changing the transmission box, should I have then reset the code?
After I change the box I still got the error code on starting the engine, but anyone who has successfully beaten this error by replacing the box did you have to reset the error code for the error to go away?

Hi all!

Sorry to double post, but can anyone confirm that when replacing the transfer case module, do you have to then perform a codes reset via an OBD tool to ensure the area doesn’t come up again?

For example, I tried a new transfer case module, installed it and then started the car however the error message came up again. I therefore assumed it wasn’t the transfer case module that was at fault, and put the old transfer case module back in again, re-selling the new one on eBay.

Should I have instead reset the code and then maybe, it would have worked just fine
