Oil pump and cambelt swap.
I'm just in the middle of a 'big' service on my D3. It's a 2005 with 165k on the clock, so not really of that much value.
It was overdue on age for cambelt, so with funds been low due to working in hospitality, I decided to have a go myself...
I've got it stripped down at the moment, when I start putting back together is it advisable to use Threadloc or similar on oil pump bolts, belt tensioner, crank pulley bolt etc ?
Has anyone fitted the crankshaft oil seal without the special tools, unfortunately can't really run to them at the moment ?
Thanks very much for help and advice

Thread lock not required.
You do need to spend money on a genuine seal as others fall out.
You can use other objects to push the seal in evenly

Have you put in a new oil pump - a definite requirement even for the very early engines.

Thanks for the help..
I was hoping I could use a big socket and the old crank bolt to pull the seal in, if that's possible.
Yes I bought full belt kit from AF including the pump

I used a big socket and tapped on the end until it stops moving. Which is about 2mm counter sunk

Finally got to putting back together - although not going too well at the moment.
I've lightly greased the rubber seals, come to put pump on and it stops about 10mm short, I just can't get it to go all the way home
Should I be lining the flats on the pump up with the flats on the crank (I've tried, but they may not be exactly right) ?
It seems to get to the point of the plastic insert, and wont go any further - I don't want to force and damage it..

Yes you need to line them up, you can move the centre of the pump around slightly with your fingers to get it to engage.
When fitted and all the bolts are tightened clean the crank and oil pump with something like brake cleaner to remove any grease before fitting the crank seal.
Carefully engage the seal on the end of the crank and check the back of the seal to make sure the lip is sealing correctly on the crank before sliding it down to the pump. Its easy for the seal to get creased due to its design.Andrew

Forgot to prime oil pump !!
Nearly got put back together after oil pump changed, and just realised I forgot to prime the new pump !!
Question is, do I need to dismantle it all again and order another seal or will it be OK to start it dry ?

Anyone thinking of changing oil pump.
I'm just in the middle of changing oil pump - I bought the belt / pump kit from forum sponsors AdvancedFactors (who I would highly recommend)
What I did was bought two crankshaft seals, one genuine, and one Victor Reinz. I guess the Reinz would be quite capable of the job, but I just preferred genuine.
The reason for buying the Reinz seal.. It comes with a really useful installation tool, which in my opinion made an tricky job so much easier (for an amateur like me)

Can you get some oil into the pump via the oil filter housing?
Question already answered Chris
