Never primed a new oil pump before. Not even the very big ones on a 20k HP ships engine. The are pre-lubed with grease and self suctioning.Citroen DS23IE

Referring back to oil seal position. Recommended fitting is recessed 1mm, maybe to ensure some clearance with crank pulley. I pushed an old seal onto the seat and measured 4mm inset. I guess this provides an alternative oil seal position, allowing continued use of a crankshaft with grooves worn in the original position.Chris

I have seen a serious loss of oil pressure on an old engine, caused by air leaking into the pickup side. It seems that a primed oil pump is not normally necessary, but for extra the time it takes there is some protection from immediate destruction on a new build. Still good practice to confirm oil pressure before firing up.Chris

There is a lot of negativity about the VR oil seals which is unfounded in my opinion, I have fitted hundreds if not a thousand of them over the years and only had one fail, and that was my fault.
If you are careful and use the correct tool they are fine.

I have no negativity about them at all, I'm sure they're perfectly fine - it was just my personal choice to go genuine.

If the raised square is in the window, which is appears to be, then yes it’s ok.
