Car problem!

Hi all

Today I towed longish distance for the first time. All run smooth.

Until on my way home driving up a long stretch of up hill road (a55 up towards Buckley from Broughton)

The car said “special programs off” and went down to 10mph!!!!

Managed to drive off the a55 to a quiet road. Turn off. Plug in for codes but the autel app needed updating yet again grrrr

Restarted the car and hey presto works fine

I’m wondering why this was!

Could it have been going up hill with revs at 1/1.5k?

Leading to another question: when towing should I be in low revs high gears to reduce strain on the engine? Or higher revs so the turbo is more active? As I was driving earlier today in higher gear under the impression it was best.

You need the actual codes to see where the fault lies! It's likely a fuel related problem which often rears its head when the engine is under load such as climbing a hill.

Each time you cycle the ign the fault is ignored until the code is logged again. Which is why it started up as if nothing was wrong, until that is you meet the same conditions as before!

Somewhere there should be an engine module. Then click the red failts to see the actual codes

I’m going for turbo actuator

My bad sorry my post crashed and logged out on here. I’ll do ASAP.

My first thought was turbo has packed in. Due to information I’ve picked up online etc. People saying special programs off happened along side turbo.

I did use a bottle of injector cleaner and a bottle of sea foam on an empty tank last week. And refilled with a bottle that had a must of water inside. Maybe it was something to do with that.

I’ll get some turbo cleaner and give the actuator a wiggle.

By the sounds of it nothing major then as no lights came on dash. Just special programs light went out.

Codes coming soon.

Thank you!

These don’t have lights on the
Dash for engine. Just a message

If you get a fault code saying turbo, then use Wynn’s vvt cleaner purple bottle

Can’t see one that says engine, however I’m presuming power train means engine?

If so then here’s the codes in it:

It sounds like a fault with the LPFP of fuel filter, the fault codes will give you more of a clue

You posted the fault codes just as i was writing.

It looks like you have a sticky turbo but i would also be concerned that you are running the fuel level to a point where the car is going into limp mode

Probably adds up to be fair as mentioned have put additives in on a completely empty tank.

I’ve cleared the codes now. Tomorrow I’ll fill up half way with no additives.

I’ll drive the long way off the motorway and see how goes

Did fuel filter recently so should be fine

I did damage / repair a pipe in the process. But it’s been fine for months and not leaking.

Yeah I don’t know why I did it. Bad decision.

See how goes tomorrow and I’ll wiggle the turbo arm now

Thanks again all! Appreciate the rapid replies

Hi,

So one of the posts about Turbo issues you have seen might be mine. There are people who have had issues towing uphill where the turbo fails to adapt (sticky actuator) and causes this. Mine never had any issues other than that, car was fine in other driving conditions.

Id rule out all the fuel issues first though. Also the infamous break pedal switch and check bulbs as they are cheaper than turbo related issues so sensible to do just to rule them out.

Running low on diesel in these is a bad idea, the car will protect itself if it thinks it might starve of fuel.
Also worth confirming the fuel filter you used, low grade ones can cause lots of problems, as can incorrectly connecting the pipework, so your repaired pipe might be the issue if it has worked loose.
As a final point the Turbo actuator can cause issues if its sticking, and the car goes into he same low powered limp mode - they corrode really quickly if the car isn't used much - lots of a decent lubricant (not wd40) and a really good work backwards and forwards sorts things normally.

Fingers crossed for an easy fix! Thumbs Up
