I was just telling the Prof, what your "oily box was".

It was this wasn't it?

Anyway, any air leaks in this or other air pipes will result in black smoke.

the "oil" in the air-intake elbow (because that's what your oily box is) is the crud that re-circulates (via EGR valves) so your engine burns it away rather than it be dumped out the exhaust.
