Spool synthetic ropes out after winching (and during the tea/beer break on a long session) so they don't melt and don't act as insulation whilst the winch cools down

I am curious about the heat build up on an electric winch.
I know that numerous models have the brake in the middle of the drum.

Several manufacturers advise against prolonged periods of “winching out” because this will understandably generate heat in the drum.

Are we saying here that prolonged winching in will produce enough heat from the electric motor to heat the drum enough to melt the plasma?

Also, bearing in mind Andrews comments that plasma + electric winch is fine on 110’s yet heat is an issue for a D3, does this not pose the question that the winch is being asked to do too much and that alternative rigging or a bigger winch is needed?

I must admit that I have done a fair bit of winching over the years yet head build up on the D3 (or any vehicle to which the winch has been fitted) with a X9+ & dynema has never been an issue.

In the general debate though, it’s plasma every time for me!

Yep and it does not have to be prolonged Thumbs Up The Warn xp 9.5 winch which is standard LR spec for a D3 IMO is not up to the job. I had plasma on my D3 but have gone back to steel. A bigger winch or hydraulic is the way to go Wink

Good Point, Rollers are the quickest way to damage the plasma line. If pulling slightly sideways the plasma line will get trapped in the edge of the rollers and start tearing, this will cause damage and subsequent failure.
