You remove the flexible injector hoses which are brittle and the clips can go missing
Remove fixed injector pipes
Remove injectors. Twist if seized
Remove fuel rail
Remove fuel rail bracket
Lift inlet Y upwards and out and renove cam cover
In wheel arch mark with paint where the heat shields join as refitting is tricky and remove them
Remove the EGR assessing bolts thru wheel arch
Remove heat shield
Unbolt exhaust manifold but leave in place

Undo the headbolts. You may require a scaffold bar for leverage
Lift head up a bit and then move head into center of the engine

When ordering a replacement headgasket note how many notches at the front as this denotes the thickness

There is a logical process to identify the problem, but I am not sure that is the best plan here. You could spend a lot of time struggling to remove covers and heads, to find the engine is beyond economical repair.

I would remove o/s cover to check timing chain and any other obvious damage. Assuming it is broken, fit a new chain, and replacement cam pulley (new bolt) set with a timing pin. Set timing position for crankshaft and n/s sprocket.

If the engine turns over by hand without obstruction, you could take out injectors and try a compression test.

By far the most difficult part of the logical process would be n/s head removal, so I would leave that as an absolute last resort.

It’s not a bad idea to do a compression test of passenger bank. If you have access to one and adaptor
I wouldn’t put the drivers side back together to make it run though. Lot of wasted effort.

Passenger side can be changed. Just not fun.

Ideally to do a compression test you would need to put the engine back together or remove the camshafts from both heads so your valves dont continue to hit the pistons.

If the pulley has snapped like that i think you are looking at an engine rebuild or replacement. Even on tick over there can be a lot of damage, i take it your engine let go while driving at higher revs than tick over

There have been several engines repaired on here by replacing head or heads.
No point messing around with the bottom end and you may as well get some more miles out of a bottom end

You are right Pete but i have never seen one hit so hard it snaps the pulley.

No snow here this morning (positive and negative).

Positive - it will give me a chance to pull the cover off at least abs maybe the head if the rain stays away, I’ll report back with updates as it unfolds. And probably ask for more help and advice!

Negative - wanted to go out and play in the snow. The disco may be having a well earned Christmas break (I thought if I’m polite it may not be soo bad!) but the rangie is still good to go!

It’s chuffing cold out though so I imagine it could only be the cover off today and the head another day. Let’s see how it goes!

Faulty pulley? I've seen belts destroyed but never a snapped pulley.

Looks like old damage on some of the breaks, also seems to bend away from the engine like its been prized off and twisted in the past.
I hope it went on tick over and the damage is minimal.

@PhilM ... I know what you mean but wonder if it's just the camera angle making those faces look like older breaks ? - it is just the ones facing upwards.

I wonder if the bolts weren't tight enough and it suddenly span loosely before hitting the bolts. that would be a good amount of force. could that snap the spokes ?

Having just had another look, it def looks like some of the spokes are fresh break and some are aged. I’m juts about to try and get the cover off, just gotta work out how to get the coolant hose off that goes across the top. Well it’s a solid pipe rather than hose. Can see I have a hose clip at either end but the pipe seems to be fixed to something as it’s not moving much on the right hand side. Gunna have a hunt at the workshop manual now while I warm my hands up inside! Brass monkeys out there on the street

EDIT - found the two bolts on the rear bracket for coolant hose facing backwards so a quick brew to warm my hands up and back to it. Smile I love this forum! Smile

If its a failed pulley you may just get away without too much damage

It’s still well out of time/alignment that side.
