[SOLVED] - Detachable Tow Hitch - Maintenance Question |
|
Can anyone help?
I finally managed to remove my tow hitch last week after many years of trying!
It has been sitting in oil for a week now and is 'fairly' free (obviously ball kept out of the oil)
I now want to grease it up but cannot remove the lock bar.
I can see the small ball bearing, and can compress it down, but the bar still won't release.
Am I missing something?

Hi,
you dont need to keep the main ball out of the oil
if you use a lubrication hitch you want a lubricated ball
and
If you use a Friction hitch (AlKo) then always good to wipe clean the ball before use anyway so no contamination of the friction material in the hitch.
as for the maintenance do you mean pressing the little pin that releases the main pin (and the lock handle rotates)
or are you removing the lock handle and shaft to work on that

Thanks for the rapid replies
It turned out I was overthinking it
Just needed to twist the lock bolt a few times and it started to come out further from the housing. The ball bearing didn't 'fly out' and appears to be stuck in the bolt - saves me from searching the garage floor for it later
I think I will have to order an overhaul kit from powerfuluk as after replacing the bolt it still doesn't lock in place by itself - possibly due to the ball bearing not releasing.

AlKo hitch so no contamination for me
Working on the spring loaded lock bolt which extends out when the hitch it put in position (after the small pin on top is pushed down) - the green handle withdraws the bolt when turned (or should if it isn't as knackered as mine!)
