Alive Remap - My thoughts |
|
So, just got my Disco back from Gumtree 4x4 who sent off my ECU to Alive for a remap. Having driving it home (hour journey) I have to say I’m a little underwhelmed. Maybe I was expecting too much but it just doesn’t feel that much different than before. I floored it a few times and was expecting to have a big smile on my face but I really can’t say that it feels any faster.
I haven’t done enough town driving to see if the hesitation has reduced at roundabouts but overall I feel a little bit “meh”.
Anybody else noticed a vast difference or is it supposed to be really subtle?

Sorry, maybe I am an ignorant here, but...
He said that he floored it a couple of times and it wasn't impressed.
In those moments the EGR is closed, turbo to max, IQ is almost to its limit and the engine is pretty much in open loop.
So, if in those conditions, what is it to adapt ?...
Or maybe me and the OP have different ideas about flooring, me considering it 100% WOT ?...

I dropped an email to Gary Wood at Alive and he couldn’t be more helpful. He suggested driving it around my normal, everyday, roads and I should notice a big difference pulling out of junctions etc.
Told me to keep in touch and he will endeavour to help wherever he can. Kudos to Alive - great service.

No secret
It was £395 + VAT. Same price as on their website.
With the later Discos (EURO6) you don’t have to send off the ECU which is very handy although mine was a very quick turnaround. Dropped the car off first thing Monday, Gumtree 4x4 sent off the ECU straight away and Alive had it back to them on Weds.
For the EURO6 Discos:

Good thing about going direct to Alive is they’ve got the rolling road equipment so they can show you exactly what they’re doing.

if I was closer to Dundee then I would pay a visit DM but when Alive HQ is about an hour from me it would be rude not to try and get on their rolling road 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

Quick update. Have been on a 2 hour journey, part motorway, part A roads and part town. I now have to say that there is definitely an improvement. Hesitation has virtually disappeared and the car just wafts along effortlessly and responds much better when accelerating. It’s so smooth. I know the Disco is renowned for wafting but I read somewhere whereby somebody described it like driving a Bentley after the remap and I have to agree. It’s very hard to describe - feels like it’s effortlessly gliding along and ready for anything you throw at it. I think I’m going to enjoy this more and more as time goes on. My son has challenged me to a drag race in his Fiesta ST. I might just accept

I'm D4 shopping right now so very interested in the end result here.
Out of interest, are you experiencing improved responsiveness across the rev range or specifically when you need extra oomph at low speeds? Do you find it just as responsive on the motorway? On paper, what BHP and torque increases are quoted by Alive?
Thanks.

Hi. There’s an improved response through the whole range. It’s insanely fast in Sport mode - I didn’t appreciate how much to begin with. When you plant the accelerator it certainly puts a big smile on your face.
Haven’t really done any motorway driving since getting the remap but judging by the acceleration and extra torque lower down the range it will be a monster on the motorway.
Unfortunately I had the remap done at one of their partner sites so didn’t have the rolling road stats as the place I went to didn’t have one.
Alive quote the following on their website and I have no hesitation in saying mine feels this fast:
“The current 8 speed Discovery 4 SDV6 models are the best yet, giving reliable engine outputs of up to 305bhp and 695Nm resulting in a 0-60mph time of 7.0 seconds, and 0-100mph in 19.9 seconds while delivering over 30mpg!”

The stats are impressive for a 3+ tonne barge. Real-world is the test though.
I'm looking at a 2014/15 car so I presume it's not an ECU out job, and all done through the OBD which is appealing, especially if the option exists to have different settings as well as back to stock.
That's another thing on the list post-purchase.
Do share your motorway experience is due course though
