Wheel swing advice please!

Will someone give me some advice and company’s best to go to for a wheel wing. A lot of people saving different brands, just like someone to give me pros and cons with the different brands! Plus it’s seems a quite expensive mod Shocked

I assume you mean a swing away spare wheel carrier?

If so I have no idea! but have seen pic of a nice sturdy one mounted to a steel rear bumper set up.

Try using the search... there were a few threads on the topic. Anyway, nakatanenga is currently (I think) the best carrier, it’s also European made so no customs and expensive transport charges to worry about.

Swing yes bit of a typo! Haha.

I’ll give them a search now thanks!.
I’ve seen pics of ones I’ve liked but can’t seem to find them over here. They must be somewhere abroad 😕

I would love a swing away carrier (there is an LPG tank where the spare should be) but they are so astronomically expensive it has put me off. Someone sent me an ebay link to one that somehow clamps to the towball, but that would stop you towing, then I realised the same company made a version that bolts behind the flange:

My only concern is that they show it with a Ford Focus spare wheel, but it looks like it may be ok. Has anyone else tried one?

Wouldn't that mean you'd have to have a very light nose weight on whatever you tow? A wheel and tyre must weigh a fair bit and would come off the nose weight allowance.

So from my limited research all bar one appears a compromise

The cheaper MP 4x4 version covers the rear reflector and parking sensors
The Raptor 4x4 one screws up parking sensors but leaves the reflector useable
The Terrafirma one appears to allow the reflector and parking sensors but is mild steel and powder coated (like the previous 2) so given how poor powder coat in general seems to be, in 2 years you'll have it all apart to be blasted and pwder coated
The Nakategena one allows parking sensors and reflectors and is made from stainless steel so even if the powder coat does fall off its not the end of the world.

None are cheap but its one of those you need to do properly in my view

I’ve had the Frontrunner swing away carrier installed on our D3 for 6 years now. We have done some serious off road trips overseas, and been laning quite a few times. It does impair the rear sensors, but the reflector is visible. The powder coating has stood the test of time and has not started flaking. It has a simple nylon bush/bearing, and that has stood the test of time as well. I use it to carry the Frontrunner BBQ grid when travelling, and also use it to carry our mountain bikes on a carrier which fits over the wheel.

I installed it, as I fitted the Frontrunner long range fuel tank.

True but the fixed towbar has a max nose weight of 250Kg. Even assuming 50Kg for the wheel and brackets that still leaves 200Kg, I would never get anywhere near that and in fact I am not sure there are any trailer couplings available rated much over 120Kg unless you start looking at ring and pin or NATO types.

Even the removable one has a nose weight limit of 150Kg so would be fine for most things, if you trusted it.......

Don't think the front runner is available anymore though is it - thats why its not on my list

Hi,

The towball one would be good option for me as I would probably only use it if and when I can off road / laning. Normally I would just keep the pare under the card then stick this on with another spare for off road. Also at that price it wont break the bank and the resale market covers a wider range of cars. The wife isnt happy about the snorkel, so I dont think shed be too chuffed if I put a wheel on the back as well. Seems like a good compromise and gives you the flexibility to remove.
I now have this thread stored for future reference.
Cheers Paul
