Knocking From left rear wheel |
|
Hi people, I've just discovered a knocking noise coming from the left side rear wheel, it's really loud and constant if driving up to (30mph) or slow it seems to keep the same knocking pace, although it's not noticeable as much when reversing just the odd knock, does anyone have any thoughts on this before I put it back in the garage...... again.
Thanks in advance π

First check that the wheel nuts are tight. If they are then jack up that wheel and check for any play in the bearings by rocking the wheel. With the handbrake off turn the wheel and listen for any noises from perhaps a handbrake shoe that has become detached. As always work safe, chock a front wheel and use axle stands when working on a jacked up car. Good luck!

Before you jack it up have a feel for place in the anti roll bar drop links and the roll bar bushes.
When you jack it up you will put pressure on these things and wont feel any movement

They will still have pressure on them due to the weight of the suspension

Just had the same. It was the spring holding the handbrake shoes. Apparently itβs a common fault but unchecked will destroy your discs.
Cheers

Quick update guys, I checked the wheel nuts 1st and they were loose on both back wheels passenger side more slack the the drivers, (just had both back tyres renewed by a renowned national garage!!) Since tightening the wheels the knocking has stopped.
You guys are true legends with the advice you give πand hopefully that's the end of that problem.
Thanks again.

Good outcome! There will be a disclaimer/advice in your invoice small print that says that you must check/retorque the wheel nuts after 100miles or so after the wheels have been off which hardly anyone is likely to do. At least you didn`t find out the hard way that the wheel nuts were loose!
