2.7 V6 Diesel cylinder off ...
Was out with the wife a couple of nights ago in her D3, and she commented that she thought it felt a bit woolly. On the way back home, it started to feel distinctly lacking in power, especially after slowing down. Felt almost as if it hadn't changed down. When we got to a junction and had to stop, the idle felt distinctly lumpy, but it pulled away again and seemed smooth enough, although still lacking in power a little. At the next stop a couple of miles further on, it was decidedly lumpy to the point where it felt like it would die if you tried to pull away. This was just a mile from home. It did pull away, and again drove ok the last mile home, but was definitely sounding like it was idling on 5 by that time.
Got my mechanic friend round who usually looks after it. Using the Autel AP200 diagnostic pod and LR3 software, the only diagnostic that seemed to indicate a problem was that the fuel balancing figure for injector 1 was much higher than for the other 5 cylinders. I might add that at start, and if the throttle is dabbed from idle, there is a large quantity of white smoke.
He identified which was injector 1 by disconnecting in turn. With the offending cylinder's injector disconnected, the engine ran exactly the same. So he removed that injector and took it into an injector specialist to be tested. They put it on their tester, and it failed it immediately saying that the measured impedance of the piezo elements was too low, so it wouldn't carry on and even attempt a fuel test. So that seemed to confirm a faulty injector. He managed to find a tested second hand replacement for sensible money, and put it in. Exactly the same ...
He swapped two injectors over. Still the same cylinder showing the bad fuel balancing. Tried the usual battery off and restart. Still no joy. So where now ? Was the original injector faulty ? Or just out of spec enough for their fancy tester to stick its nose in the air and reject it as faulty out of hand ? I know that the replacement injector is ok because it runs in another cylinder. Anybody had this and have a solution to it ? Anyone got a copy of the wiring diagram that shows the V6 diesel injector wiring back to the ECU ? I have electrical diagrams, but they don't seem to show the V6 diesel wiring ??
We have a bit of a plan on what to try next, but any help or wisdom from the good folk on here would be appreciated

First question; what is injector one in your story?
Injector number is NOT as a Definition the same as cylinder number.. (although one is i think)
Tell us which one you mean
Seen from sitting in the car point of view..
Best regards

Thanks for replying
As stated, injector number 1. Which according to your picture happens to be cylinder number 1. The diagnostic software points out that injector numbers do not necessarily correspond to cylinder numbers, hence the reason he electrically disconnected injectors to find out which one was injector 1. And it was indeed front left as the diagram shows.

Sorry. From driver's position, I guess that would be front right, but standing in front of the car looking into the engine compartment, front left. And with that one disconnected, the engine ran exactly the same so I think that cross-confirms which cylinder is not firing and which cylinder belongs to that injector number

Have you tried a compression check on that cylinder

Not yet. It's one of the next things to try. It did seem to happen fairly quickly, but not 'all ok - snap - not all ok' if you see what I mean. Not sure what might happen to cylinder mechanics to cause compression to drop over a period of a few miles ?? Total round trip was about 12 miles. Had diesel put in in the morning and was running fine. Son-in-law then borrowed it for a round trip of about 12 miles also and he reports no problems. Seemed ok when we set off on our trip, but when we got out on the dual carriageway, wife said that it didn't feel quite right, but no signs of any idle problems at that point, nor when we first started back, although again, she commented that it felt woolly and lacking in power a little, though not a lot. Any thoughts ??

Sounds like a cracked piston or valve train problem. Stick a camera into that injector port, if piston looks OK you'l have to check the cam/valve timing.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Check with the place you filled up see if anybody else had an issue.
I once broke down and called my Dad to tow me back home only to find that he had engine problems too we had both filled up at the same garage that morning, my Dad was a member of the AA who after looking at his car called the garage to be told they had problems with there under ground tanks.

+1
But there can be a more simple reason... if the “not functioning” Or better over compensating injector is “just” reacting on “false” information? Trying to compensate something?
Dirty maf sensor, egr valve, etc.
Pulling connectors from injectors with a running engine on a TDV6 can also cause problems i did read earlyer here...Best regards

Yes it can be very damaging To the engine.
Check the ecu connection condition behind battery.
