Lockdown battery blues

I’m in the shielding group so not been outside for almost 3 months. I was nipping outside and turning the engine over every week, stretching it’s legs raising and lowering the suspension too, all okay. Last week was the first time I ventured out and I’ve got a dead battery! I jumped it from my Halo charger (top bit of kit, how something that small can do that is beyond me!) and got it going, but fear it’s a new battery for me. So that’s together with the insurance/tax paid out (it’s parked on the road) has offset any savings in diesel!

You don't mention how you are recharging the battery after starting it each week If you are starting it without recharging the battery I am not surprised it is flat . It would take more than a few minutes running to recharge it. I would put the battery on charge for 24 hrs or so before buying another one although a deep discharge does then no good.

It probably just needs charging. The disco will run the battery down just sitting still, and starting it weekly will drain more than it recharges by running for a short time. Get an intelligent charger that you can safely leave on all the time you're not using the car.

Maybe look to fit an Optimate Solar charger if it's out on the road....

Rob's dead right Thumbs Up

But you need to sort your battery out first. If you need a new one Halford's will supply & fit & give, IIRC, a 5 year guarantee.

There's a description of the Optimate here:-

https://www.willgen.co.uk/blog/optimate-so...-good.html

and, importantly, a guide to sizing here:-

https://www.willgen.co.uk/blog/what-size-o...-need.html

Don't forget that installing behind tinted (rather than clear) glass can reduce solar panel output considerably and consideration should be given to installing a larger solar charger than otherwise.

Good luck
