Roof Fin - glued or bolted?

Hi.. I just bought a 2006 D3 HSE (Panoramic roof).. after being away from the Disco family for 3 years!

I have found that the roof fin/aerial is loose.. but having searched the forum I'm none the wiser if the fin is glued or bolted on a glass roof disco?

Or maybe I didn't find the post(s) that says? Very Happy

Can anyone help with whether the fin is glued or bolted on?

Many thanks!

I'm just trying to take off the fin on my D4, mostly to replace the screws which have gone rusty.

The screws just seem to be spinning as if the captive nut has broke free.

I've tried putting some upward pressure on the fin housing with a trim tool to see if that would help but no joy! Big Cry

Anyone else had this issue? Any ideas how to get the screws out?

Cheers,

Jason

What screws?

From the top or from underneath?

The problem was that the screws have corroded and fused to the threaded inserts. This has caused the inserts to break free when being unscrewed. Tried spraying some Kano aerokroil in there but still couldn't budge them.

In the end i had to break the inner plastic moulding and detach the antenna from the cowling so I could get it all off. Bagged up the antenna to stop the rain getting to it.

Now to get busy with the epoxy and fix this mess. Will report back when the jobs is done.

PS Sorry for hijacking this thread. Hope the OP doesn't mind Whistle Just thought it would be useful to keep all this information together Thumbs Up

Finally got around to finishing the roof antenna but forgot to post some pictures so here they are: -

A comparison of the old and new brackets that are glued/fixed to roof glass. Notice lack of bushes in the old one. Could have probably epoxy'd in some new ones but the new bracket came up in a search on eBay for about £10. The part number for this is EFT500041.

Scraped off the old sticky tape using a single edged razor blade and the some 'sticky stuff' goop remover.

Then degreased the glass area to be glued to and bracket with this from Screwfix.

Painted some of this on the underside of the bracket and on glass as it's meant to help the sealant adhere better. Worked really well on my Freelander roof bar plastic clip on bits. I painted this on and then used Sikaflex 221 to help them stay on. Touch wood they're still there.

Then marked up the area using making tape to help me align the antenna properly. I used the grommet that the antenna wire runs though as a centre point (under plastic bag in this picture).

Put a bead of Sikaflexx around the underside of the bracket and aligned it as best I could.

You don't have to worry about the adhesive 'squeeze out' too much as it will be covered by the top housing.

Put some handy weights on to keep it in place while I let it set overnight.

I was really pleased with the bracket fixing. It seems to be a very strong bond to the glass.

Re-assembled everything...

I used some silicon grease around the gasket where the antenna mates to the upper housing and also applied a liberal amount around the cable entry to help repel water.

Finally clipped back on the front part of the antenna dome and fixed the rear part using 2 new Torx 5 star screws (M5 x 14mm XYP500240). I used some Duralac Green in the threaded inserts to slow any bi metal corrosion so that the screws can easily be undone in the future.

Just need to clear out the accumulated Censored in the rainwater channels now! Laughing

General help please.

Now got 2014 D4 and very happy! Need some info / tips.
1. How to safely and effectively remove glue from removed headlight deflectors. Some suggestions have been :- petrol, brasso and brake cleaner. Reluctant to try until sure of not causing damage.
2. Tried removing the middle row seats headrests but don’t seem to want to come out easily and don’t want to force until I’m sure.
3. The plastic trim below the windscreen that the wipers pass through has gone milky, what’s best to clean that with?
4. What are the pivoting blocks hanging forward of the rear crossmember.
5. Can you buy calliper covers?
6. Can you buy sill protectors for the painted bit below the doors?

I could go on but I think that’s enough for now. Thanks in advance.

I had exactly the same issue, but afraid I just gave up and retightened the existing screws. Surprised as only the head on one crew was starting to look rusty (MY2016) and assumed they wouldn’t retighten if fused to the threaded inserts? I’d read about the screw rusting problem thus hoped to replace them as a preventative measure. The fin and cover still seems to be tightly fitted, so I’m leaving well alone at atm.

Excellent write up on the problem and solution btw.

Welcome
You would be better off starting a new thread with your questions rather than posting on this one.

The fin on my MY11 HSE just fell off after 2 years. First I knew was the thrumming and tapping as it hung on by the wires. Dealer just “bonded” it back on and checked it the next day to make sure it was secure.

Probably the only fix a dealer ever managed first time.
