31.5" wheels

I have 265/65/18 tyres for off-roading and my question is if the air suspension fails completely will I still be able to drive the car? Using my mudtech kit (-3 Cm) I can still get into access mode with a little space left but maybe the bump stops are even lower?

That's an excellent question as I've just squeezed a set of 32" ones onto mine. At the moment I'm reluctant to even go into access-height as it looks like the tyres might "rest" on the inner wheel arches.

I was looking at this exact thing yesterday and posted it on another topic but here you go...

I’m getting some larger tyres fitted so decided to measure the car at different heights to check for clearance. The measurements below are from the ground to the top of the inner side of the wheel arch.

Current tyres are 255 55 R19

Bump stops 825mm
Access 850mm
Normal 900mm
Off-road 950mm

These aren’t exact so don’t blame me if you drop to access height and your wheel arches don’t!

that doesn't look quite right as with my mudtech I can go down 3cm from access mode (not sure if it's then on the bump stops)

You could be right. As I said it’s not 100% accurate and I could have been 5mm off.

Not sure if you ever got an answer to that, but if not I'll try. The bump stops are actually inside the air rams. If you are familiar with the bump stops on an adjustable coil over damper, they're much like that. If not, think rubber dohnut around the shaft to stop it closing fully metal to metal at minimum length. So with no air pressure in it, the ram simply gets shorter until the lower part sits against a rubber(ish) ring inside the upper part.

I actually did try it with my 32" tyres on. At the back there is still an inch or two clearance to the inner arch, but at the front it the tyre just touches. Turning the wheel only makes this worse. It would make for a very uncomfortable and probably very damaging journey if forced to drive with the rams on their bump stops. My solution has been to fit spacers above the rams to give enough clearance to make it drivable in this condition. I'm also considering fitting a "manual inflate" system for the rams. It wouldn't fix a leaking ram, but it would overcome an EAS module that was deliberately lowering it for some other reason.

Hope that helps Very Happy

You're very welcome. And thank you for the link, that might come in very useful. For the moment I'm limiting myself to spraying PlusGas on every major suspension nut and bolt every time I happen to be under the car. Hoping it will pay off when I eventually get round to replacing stuff Very Happy
