I’ve had a few customers with the same issue and it’s only with GiffGaff, so I’m pretty sure it’s a giffgaff change/issue
Two elements, firstly as mentioned previously, switch off the balance texts from the giffgaff account page.
Secondly, try texting the Altox with SMSF01 as that should stop it forwarding non ‘command’ texts to your phone.
Hope that helps. Bodsys Brake Bible

I joined the Giff Gaff forum, posted what had happened and one of their staff jumped on it.
My total credit was refunded without me even asking.
I did get on it immediately, and within an hour or so of them changing their procedures, so perhaps I was one of the first to highlight it and they didn't expect to be refunding so many people.
I'm sorry you guys have had a harder time getting your credit back.

looks like I was quick enough to stop the loop at 19 texts ... so "made" 10p on this. I'd rush out to spend it if it weren't for lockdown.

Altox receives the message and forwards it to the owner. You can turn off SMS forwarding (SMSF0) and set up a balance USSD request by the module, for example (USSD:*100#).
Now not all mobile operators support USSD requests.
