Webasto Thermo Top V wiring |
|
Afternoon all,
Apologies as I don't own a disco three however have been advised that you guys and girls may be the most knowledgeable for what I am trying to do.
Purchased a new Thermo Top V heater from Duckworth LR parts at Peterborough recently. The intention is to fit it into my 200tdi Defender and use it as a parking heater/auxiliary heater. I have trawled the internet and still haven't found a comprehensive set of information.
I am mainly looking at the wiring of the heater and what each pin controls? It has an 8 pin socket and 2 pin socket. Fairly sure the 2 pin is for fuel pump and the 8 pin is my main loom one. Does anyone know what each of the 8 pins does and controls so that I can work out the best wiring to run for my defender?
Hope you don't mind me posting on here.
Kind regards
Kieran

You would need to have a look at the wiring diagram for the D3's installation of the FBH.
But....
The big two pin plug is for power (12V and Ground).
The 8 pin plug is for communication (WBUS), fuel pump feed and CAN bus pair (the CAN bus isn't needed for a retrofit into a Defender).
I can supply the 8 pin plug and wiring through the shop: www.disco3.co.uk/shop/
I might have a 2 pin plug and terminals if you need? 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

As a PS,
2 pin plug:
Pin 1: 12V permanent 20A fused
Pin 2: Ground
8 pin plug:
Pin 2: WBUS
Pin 4: CAN Low
Pin 5: Fuel Pump feed - to pin 2 on fuel pump. Ground to pin 1 on fuel pump to complete circuit.
Pin 7: CAN High

Thanks for all the advice, the whole thing is starting to make a little more sense.
I have been looking at a few historic posts on the forum and I am guessing I need to get a timer or some form of device which outputs a w-bus signal to control the FBH on pin-2?
Also what is meant by CAN low and CAN high? What do I wire those pins to on my defender? Are all the other pins redundant ones then or do they have other functions?
Thanks for the help.
Martin, I will probably order those plugs in the coming week if that is ok? Need to source a fuel dosing pump first.

Yes you need something that speaks WBUS to tell it to run.
The CAN bus is how the D3 tells it to run, these would be not wired up on your install - no wires needed.
Any pins I've not mentioned are not needed
So only 2 pins needed on the 8 pin: WBUS and fuel pump.

Webasto Thermo Top V wiring |
|
Good afternoon all
Apologies for piggy-backing on this topic but I have similar issues to deal with.
I have the above heater from a 2011 Range Rover Sport and want to use it out of a car. I have learnt I do NOT need CAN to control it but read that I DO need W-BUS, I would have preferred a simple on/off switch as that is all I need.
Webasto dealers tell me that I can not use it without the vehicles ecu but I'm willing to give it a try if people here say it can be done.
I have software from http://sourceforge.net/projects/libwbus/ which I understand will control the heater.
I understand I will need an adapter between my lap top and the heater, is this suitable please? http://www.ebay.com/itm/W-BUS-Adapter-used...1316743161
Can someone point me to the simplest & cheapest W-BUS controller to use with the heater please?
After all that as the heater is an auxiliary one will I be able to turn it on & off at will?
Any help appreciated.

Thanks for your prompt response, I have read the thread you suggested, seems they have devised some clever control.
I can not pm anybody yet as I am a Newbie. Will try when able, in the meantime I hope somebody else can come up with a solution, I will Pay.

Webasto Thermo Top VEVO from 2012 Range Rover Sport |
|
Many thanks to all the guys on this forum who have responded to my posts, plus all those who have written on the subject of controlling a FBH.
I have now taken the advice of several Webasto dealers regarding the Thermo Top VEVO and have given up trying to control it outside the vehicle as I can not get WTT programme to communicate with it via W-BUS.
As I understand it many/most models of the Thermo Top can be controlled simply, just not this model.
Anybody got a FBH to sell? Anybody want a clean, young Thermo Top VEVO?
Again thanks to everybody.

As interface between Webasto and your laptop you can use this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-IBUS-I-BUS-t...3ce8e5054a
Works for me may about 5 years without any problems. BMW I-bus and W-bus are very similar.

Thanks for the idea, is your FBH specifically a Thermo Top VEVO? I understand it is this model which is the problem. I have been trying a USB adapter as described on this forum.

Many thanks for your offer. Does this include inlet or exhaust silencer please? Is P&P included? Is any warranty included please?
I ask because these seem more expensive than eBay, but perhaps you are offering more?
Regards

I'm not a Webasto dealer I just bought them for a different project(hot tub) but never got round to using them. They both work perfectly, not sure if they have silencers but I'll dig them out and take a photo. A lot on eBay have faulty ecu's so beware. Club Exped trailer
