Disco 3 caravan towing

Hi everyone

I am on the verge of purchasing a Disco 3 HSE and don't want to end up in the same situation that I had with my TD5. I had a bad experience towing a single axle caravan with a TD5 which had A.C.E. suspension which used to pick up caravan twitches whilst travelling on the motorway and exaggerate these until you were in a fully blown snake! Does the disco 3 have any similar computerised system that would cause the same problem?

Has anybody had good or bad experiences towing a single axle caravan with the Disco 3?
 Regards
Andy

By far the best towcar I've ever had!

Never had a moments worry albeit with twin axle. Mind you, my TD5 before was brilliant also. Razz

Hi Martin

Did your TD5 have ACE suspension? I understand that TD5's without ACE weren't a problem.

I have followed my brother in his D2 + caravan for 000's of miles in England, Ireland and France. Hundreds of times he had problems with "truck ruts" etc which never once gave my D3+caravan a problem.

His difficulties were so great he has splashed out on the new Alko electronic stability unit - me? I have a D3 Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

My parents tow a Avondale Osprey and have never had a problem in nearly 3 years with a D3, they didn't with D2 with ACE either but tell me the difference is huge.

My D2 with ACE used to tow my 3500kg twin axle trailer without drama.

Not tried the D3 yet but am expecting great things!

There was a well known problem with D2 s that had the air suspension on the rear and ACE. If I remember correctly when towing for some strange reason, probably because the D2 had air suspension at the back and coils at the front the ACE system caused a lot of instability problems. Nobody seemed to know why, as without a trailer the car behaved perfectly.

The D3 has either coils all round or more commonly, air all round and there have been no reports nationally of any instability problems ( within the Caravan Club nationally) whereas there was with D2 + air + ACE.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, just remembered. Tyre type and pressures were also a contributing factor.

I think that was the problem, not all cars fitted with that combination were affected. But those that were affected were a nightmare. They appeared very sensitive to the make of tyre fitted and more critically, the tyre pressures

speed warning

For what it's worth I always engage the "speed warning" when towing as it is such a superb tow car it is easy not to notice how the speed creeps up.

Yes it did (fantastic system that I miss in this car)! I did find that the car needed as big a noseweight as was legal though!

As mensioned the ruts where a problem with the D2, not noticable with a D3

I assume that you will be getting an auto. as it is a HSE. Mine is a manual gearbox and i have mentioned before that i get a problem with clutch burning when reversing my trailer around a corner. The dealer tested the car by driving it without a trailer and said that the clutch didn't slip so there wasn't a problem. I towed the same trailer with my D2 and never had a problem with the clutch. The trailer is 1000KG fully loaded.
