Disco5 engines
Can any of you fine gents advise if the 3.0 TD engine in the D5 is the same or similar unit as in the D4 - if so has anyone had any of the crank snapping etc that seems to happen in the '4. I have joined in on the D5 forum but they dont seem as friendly..

With variations in power output and the numbers of turbos, it’s the same engine as the D4. There’s no evidence to suggest that the crank will be any different in its life expectancy.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4

There are three years of very little evidence though 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Thanks Guys. I was also considering the 2.0 240bhp engine... although I understand there 'may' be a new 3.0 TD due out towards the end of this year.

DG do you mean there’s a lack of evidence because in three years not many people have bought them? 🦄

Global slowdowns aside ...not sure that is the case is it....unless you have different stats 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I assume you are saying that the 3.0 TD engine in the D5 is a good engine?
What changes have JLR implemented since the similar engine in the D4?

Do you mean the I6 engines? I haven’t heard of any new V6 engines. In the D5, I believe the TD refers to the single turbo, and the SD refers to the twin turbo, like the D4, but with more power added.
I don’t think anyone can knock the SDV6 for drivability. It’s a great engine, one of the best diesels I have driven!, it’s the ongoing crank failure which is the only thing which puts some people off.

Given the choice between the likelihood of crankshaft failure on the 3.0 V6, the possibility of balance shaft failure on the 2.0, or completing LR’s development and testing on the new straight 6 Ingenium, I’d place my bet on the V6 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

On the D5 site, there were 2 reports of balance shaft failures on 2017 D5 2.0 engines, which were a lower ps output similar to DS\Evoque afaik.
I suspect it's like any other engine failure rate tbh ...sadly that can't cure the 'engine fails shock' mentality of some I guess. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

The ingenium was an utterly engine
The Evoque/DS suffered hugely with balance shafts, DPF, EGR, Turbo, SCR issues...
I have heard that so many times, and I'm sure you are right The question is have JLR done anything of late to solve the problems?
Keep well

Everybody says the ingenium is but in my experience it’s been faultless, unlike the 3.0 in my D3 which was replaced under warranty due to crankshaft and the 3.0 in my D5 replaced under warranty due to oil dilution, not in my ownership when it went, I had the sense to get shot when LR refused to acknowledge the issue.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green
