I received this today, so am passing it on for awareness (/ donations!)
GLASS wrote:Dear GLASS member
No matter where you live almost every green laner and trail rider has heard of Happy Valley, Carn March Arthur, The Wayfarer and Horseshoe. These are some of the most iconic green lanes in the UK, but damage has been caused by those who choose to act outside the responsible green laning community. This, coupled with the impact of weather and water erosion, has left local authorities with some hefty repair bills they simply cannot cover - so we need to take steps to bring these important routes back to their former glory.
Over winter GLASS have been busy forming plans with Denbigh, Wrexham and Gwynedd County Councils, Snowdonia National Park Authority and local landowners – now it’s time for action!
GLASS are going to help fund these large projects which include:
Helicoptering hundreds of tons of stone to repair Happy Valley and Carn March Arthur
Bridge repairs, sleeper section maintenance, drainage improvement, signage and off-piste solutions on the Wayfarer
Signage and drainage improvement along the full length of Horseshoe
We’ll be digging into our fighting fund to complete each project, but the shortfall needs to be covered by donations. Money raised will be ring-fenced for these projects and any excess used for future maintenance on the routes.
Our crowdfunding page can be found here: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/greenlaneassociation (Please note that during the process donations to JustGiving are optional)
A project overview and future ongoing updates can be found here: https://www.glass-uk.org/help-save-our-iconic-welsh-lanes.html
With your help we can ensure that some of the most well-known lanes in the UK are preserved for us all to drive for years to come.
Finally, don't forget to pass the link to donate onto any green laners you know.
Many thanks for your support....

The problem is the non law abiding will just carry on doing what they are still doing, making a mess and getting the lanes shut, quite a few in Kent gone over the last few years.

Hugh & lynalldiscovery
You are so right.
I have lived on a BOAT for c.12 years. When I moved in I could drive to the next village, with care, in the summer, but didn't choose to as the surface was clearly being damaged. Over the last 12 years there has been major damage, to the extent that it's only really passable to motor cycles, pedestrians & horses.
The motor cycles continue to cause damage, to the extent that it is difficult to walk on the steeper bits, and now, far too late, the local authority is considering a TRO.

They are ; we must be better than them.
Alas, there is no sense of personal responsibility these days, i.e., "I have the absolute right to do what I want. Someone else can sort out any problems". On a recent rip to Wales, we watched lots of white Transit vans congregate in a layby, quadbikes emerged from them or their trailers and proceeded to rip-up a footpath. Chances of getting caught? B**ger all.
I spent quite a while talking to a Rural Crime copper last week. They are overstretched and people dog-baiting and badger-baiting for the benefit of Asian gamblers are at the top of their list - they simply have neither the time nor resources to address 4x4 hooligans. On a trip round Salisbury Plain last year, one of the attendees had given up green-laning elsewhere after balaclava-wearing thugs stoned his vehicle.
This is the most intolerant 'tolerant' country I know.

I got the email the other day and will be making a donation. Hopefully when the local authorities and other groups see that the 4x4 community are not all ar*eholes causing destruction on the lanes and elsewhere, that we are helping to maintain these routes, it will hopefully go some way to make people change their opinions that all greenlaners are morons.
We cannot let these idiots spoil it for those that legally greenlane, if they get caught confiscate their vehicles and sell them using the money raised to repair the lanes they damaged. General Grabber AT3's

ive not been laning for quite a while now, but I made 4/5 trips round the peak district (Castleton, Monsal Head etc) with an organised group. The leaders split us into small groups of around 6 vehicles (soft roaders or lifted monsters) and off we went.
They were responsible, respectful and wouldn't attempt any lanes that looked too beaten up.
However we regularly saw idiots in bobtails etc ragging up deep mud mounds and ruining everything.
The group eventually closed down because of the level of online abuse they started getting; 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

The Derbyshire Rural Crime Team are working hard around me, having specific days to search for quads and bike using the lanes illegally and stupidly. 9/10 times the bikes are unregistered and thus illegal to drive on a BOAT or otherwise.
They've invested in 4x4's, Bikes, Quads and Drones to help combat it Disco4 MY16 SDV6 Landmark Black

Interesting, down here in Hampshire police have been sent photographs of untaxed vehicles, & screen prints from DVLA website proving that they are untaxed, and they have done nothing.
I have suggested a complaint to the Police & Crime commissioner; but the person in question says "Why bother ?" they don't investigate shoplifting of items valued under £200 etc....

It's a poor state of affairs

Hi Browny.
The team have have joint days with South Yorks, and Notts Police.
As well as there normal Blackbrook operation in Derbyshire.
Came across them all at Clumber Park a fortnight back, while at the Caravan Club site.
They all met at 10am with LR 90 painted black, and red off road bikes.

I gave up offroading 4 or 5 years ago. Mainly because of abuse from others who are/were very anti all offroaders - and much of it justified to be fair.
I live near Hamsterley Forest and it's reasonably common (maybe half a dozen times a year) to see off-road 'parties' of a dozen or so vehicles. What they have in common seems to be:
- Heavily modified road vehicle or based on a quad bike chasis (or even just ordinary quad bikes) - so probably not used much on tarmac
- about 50% are unplated
- ignore the notices put up by GLASS or the forest managers
These idiots just spoil it for everyone, but - unless caught in the act, which very rarely happens - they get away with it.

Personally I think that unless greenlanes take you to a specific destination not accessible by any other means, then they should all be closed.
Basically, green laneing is recreational off-roading on ancient by-ways inaccessible to anything other than 4x4, quad bikes, motorbikes and horses. D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

Bit late to the post. The 20000 cops will only replace what has been lost in the last 10 years. In real terms less cops now than when I joined in 97. All smoke and mirrors. Next year over 50% cops will have less than 5 years service! The world was also a slightly different place back then! I left after 20 years. Would not wish the job on my worst enemy now. Thankless task.
