Just back up in Perth for a couple of days R&R. InterCont Perth for less than we’ve been paying at some Best Westerns, plus foc lounge access due to having spent a long time in their establishments.

No longer, that was a one off as this hotel has working scales. We’re both up about 1/2 st (3kg) in 3 weeks so we’re both back on diets. Plus we’re driving everywhere, much less walking. Today’s breakie was a ham & cheese omelet with mushrooms. Very slimming, but no pics as it got wolfed down very quickly in case it shrank even more on the plate.
And Happy Australia Day to all our Aussie peeps. And non Aussie peeps.

Getting 39 mpg (actual) with the X-Trail at the mo, not bad for a 2.4l petrol powered soft reader. And with u/l at 75ppl, happy days.
We’re long(ish) hauling up to Exmouth, where WA stops going straight north and hacks NE ish. Not a lot of input needed from the navigator!! Mind you, we did manage to miss our turn off for the hotel due to audio being on the wrong setting.

And re hot, seriously hot. AC coped beautifully and drinks were kept nicely chilled in the AC cooled cup holders. Now that is pure geniousness!! How hot? This hot!

Morning folks, hope all going well in Blighty and other places warm or cold.
Been up in the top, for us, of WA, up in the Exmouth & Ningaloo Reef areas. It’s been pretty toastie, away from the immediate coast it jumps up into the low 40s and the sun is truely scorchio. Luckily nothing lots of AC doesn’t sort out.
First stop, Coral Bay and a 1 hr boat trip through/over the corals behind the main fringe reef. Lots of corals, it seemed that our boat was only a few inches over the corals, esp the big bad boy corals.

When we stopped & tied up at a buoy there were a fair few big spangled emperor fish waiting on us. Forget all the theories re shade, shelter, protection from sharks etc, turns out they get fed. Good enough reason.

A few seemed to be looking at the humans in the boat. Glad he’s not telepathic, I was thinking “chips and lemon wedges”.

Then to Exmouth and round to the other end of the peninsular & reef. Lovely scenery, when desert meets lovely tropical (yes we were back in the tropics) beaches.

This was where the road, well tarmac bit of it ended, Yardie Creek. The road, now all sand, continued down to Coral Bay a couple of hundred kms to the south.

Note lack of getting out of the car. It’s mainly coz of these critters, Aussie bush flies. They are pretty bad if you don’t get the head net on before getting out of the car. By the time SWMBO overtook me on the way back to the car she thought there was easily double that number.

Note the wreck top right of that pic, that’s what we were going to look at. It was pretty much intact until the RAAF used it as target practice back in the day.

There’s a big Aussie Navy comms station just north of Exmouth, it’s not really secret as it’s all over Google Street View. Lots of VLF stuff for talking to Aussie & Yank subs.

Not really a “spotted” but saw this very sad looking D3. It must be about the 5th D3/4 we’d seen that looked like it was being used off the black stuff. We’ve seen hundreds & hundreds & hundreds of Toyotas, Nissans & Mitsus that are tooled for playing off-road.

On the way south from Exmouth headed up the only tarmac road up into the plateau area. It was a bit like mini Grand Canyon, hope fully with Rock Wallabies. Sadly didn’t see any of said Rock Wallabies, I hoped to see a punk version but sadly dissapointed.

Finally, today did a drive up to the blowholes N of Carnarvon. Pretty impressive even with fairly mild waves. And double bonus the flies weren’t too bad. We now carry head nets in our pockets but didn’t need them today.

Heading down to Denham tomorrow and the Monkey Mia park hopefully to see dolphins up close to the shore. At least there are no monkeys.

And another day, another pie. This time steak & pepper from the Overlander Road House at the turnoff from Rte 1 for Sharks Bay.
And very nice it was too.
Today was a bit of a RT heading back south, with a detour to Denham for Sharks Bay and Monkey Mia for the dolphins.
Remember here from the flights from Singapore what seems like eons ago?

The extreme left side of that pic is Hamlyn Pools where the world famous Stromatolites are found. It’s kind of “life Jim, but not as we know it, not as we know it, not as we know it” that’s unchanged for billions of years. It’s one of the first things you learn about in Palaeontology 101 before moving on to trilobites & graptolites.

Needless to say lots of more recently evolved critters around so nets were doing their thing.

We’ve given up worrying about looking daft, it’s better looking daft than having flies trying to sneak up your nose or in your ears & mouth. One even tried to get in SWMBO’s schnoze while she was wearing her net.
And Shell Beach just up the road from Hamlyn Bay. Both hypersaline but this beach made of lots of tiny complete bivalve shells. Resisted the urge to go for a dip, would look super silly swimming with the fly net on.

We did a detour to get to the other side of the peninsular, one very loooooooooooooong and straight road that had recently been sealed.

Now tucked up in Denham. The room is a bit bleak but at least the AC works, well at least as long as we don’t close the loo door. Off outside shortly to see if there are any sharks kicking around, aquatic rather than humanoid, and looking forward to serious seafood scoff tonight. Pics to follow, promise.

Another place to have a look around and sit in a thermal spa is the Peron Heritage Precinct https://goo.gl/maps/MD8bBUkaj2UHyx9t6 between Denham and Monkey Mia, it is about 6Km on unsealed road but perfectly OK for 2wd. Don’t even think about driving through the ‘Air down area’ as the sand there can get quite boggy.MY14 TDV6
