Pretty sure the D4 one is better arrangement, where you can't crumple the filter and thus f*ck the oil flow.

But and it's just a but there are x4 pipes on the d3 oil filter x2 oil and x2 coolant and it's easy to connect them up wrong way round sending coolant three the oil pipe and vis versa

Worst news

Oh Phil,

Sorry to hear this mate, I know that car has had a lot of time and effort poured into it by you.

Fingers crossed the WD process is quick and a smooth fix.

Keep us all posted Thumbs Up

You don't disconnect any coolant or oil pipes on a service...

Really sorry to read this. Every D4 owners worst nightmare.

However I would be very suspicious of it happening right after the service. Did you check the oil level after the service?

I did.

I am a bit OCD about that, and checked it yesterday morning and after work. It was showing full 2 miles before it broke down.

It was still showing full when I sitting on the side of the road waiting for the rescue people.

I don't really believe in coincidence.

I would highly suspect that something on the service has been done incorrectly, if they argue, I would try and get a sample of the engine oil, and view the actual damage (maybe with someone with you who knows what they're looking at.

Has it gone to the garage that serviced it or somewhere independent?

A few of many possible things:
Filter fitted incorrectly (or wrong filter), wrong oil, something else tampered with during the service, oil contaminated before filling, FOD dropped into the oil filler when filling..

There's so many things they could have done incorrectly/ by mistake. I'm sure WD will think along the same lines.

Good post Browny, and some interesting points.

I guess it will all come out in the wash, but whatever happens, its going to take a long time, and I need a car for Monday.

Seriously tempted by a petrol FF Vogue (an old cheap one). You never know, it might be reliable!

I cant complain about the Disco too much. I have had 2.5 years, done 50k in it, and other than this, its never let me down.

Shouldn’t take months to replace as LR have service exchange engines for the D4 available currently.

Just remember that people make mistakes..

Even a good indy or a main dealer..

I was a main dealer truck mechanic for 11 years and made the odd mistake (not many mind you..)

One that springs to mind is, I did a breakdown on the A14, 44t Scania blocking the carrageway,

Symptoms.. Loud bang, lack of power and smoke, which was like a standard list for a blown turbo, then they usually filled the intercooler with oil so needed recovery.

I went out, tilted the cab, removed the air intake form the turbo and stuck my finger in, the blades were intact, bearings a little loose but not terrible but felt some oil so ASSUMED the turbo seals..

Vechicle recovered for upwards of £500.. got a call from the workshpop the next morning!!

Vehicle had run out of diesel.. Rolling Eyes Big Cry Yawn Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

We all make mistakes and can be complacent.. So dont just assume that the damage is 'Just another D4 with a s Censored t engine.. keep an open mind and NEVER assume things Rolling with laughter

England

Took just on a month for LR to replace the engine in mine October last year, although fortunately is was under manufacturers warranty, so they provided a replacement a RR sport, picked it up from dealers drove it home and part exchanged it 4 days later for a different marque. A three litre diesel with such a short life span is not for me, particularly as it would not be covered in the future by LR extended warranty except by good will.

Hope you gets yours sorted quickly and it's not terminal, but something quick and easy to fix, mine would turn over allbeit with a horrible noise.

Can't be done on a D4. No pipes are removed, filter just twists into place
