Wheel size change
Hi I have just swapped my Defender for a 2006 D3 at the moment it's running on 20" 275/40/20 but the tyres are not great condition and the rims have a few kerb scuffs but would be expensive to change all the tyres and have the alloys cleaned up so and I am picking up on thursday some unused alloys with 18" 235/60/18 pirelli scorpions verde which are already fitted whats your thoughts on the differance they will make as i have always thought smaller wheels are more of a better ride on and off rd

.... and the 20" tyre size isn't right either.
should be 275/45/20 to keep close to original rolling radius....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

I prefer 18" inch and have recently changed my D3 from 19" inch.
I bought some second hand rims off the Forum and had them refurbed. The price will depend on where you are, and I found prices averaged between 60-100 quid + depending on the company and what level of refurbishment you had done.
I had mine black power coated. The tyres can depend on what you are going to be doing, and there are plenty of guides on the forum to decide this, just read up in this section.
I used this link, found on the forum, to decide for my tyres (mix of 70% road/gravel and 30% off-road tracks)
Although it is more for telling you whether you need a lift kit for certain sizes!

I don't think I will be off road much as I have done a lot of that before so just dirt roads now and again but I am not going for the bling look either so pretty middle ground l just feel that it might be cost effective buying 2nd hand but getting a smaller wheel set and selling mine rather than buying new tyres and refurbing these .

Those 20" wheels do look small with the wrong sized tyres.
For comparison, here's my grey one with black wheels and 275/45/20 tyres.
btw my tyres are Grabbers AT3, and ideal compromise for on & off road.

if those 20's have 275/40x20 they are the original RRS tyre size (on RRS rims), so not wieght rates high enough either for the D3.
and the 18's with 235/60x18's are freelander size, if so they wouldnt fit you D3 either

Been on the retail park this afternoon and a D5 had the identical tyres and 18" alloys on so i'm going to go for them and put them on at the sellers house to make sure also checked with JLR and they say they should be fine even though the door sticker says 235/55/18 on the D3 nothing at all for 20" is recommended.

a D5 wont have had 18" alloys on unleess they were Compomotives.
for 18" D3 rims it needs 255/60x18, not 235's. Check the weight rating as will, you need 111.
You wont see 20" rims on your door label as LR never fitted these (even as options) to the D3, only D4 and D5.

Gone for recognitions on the door as mentioned in the comments 255/55/19 being fitted tomorrow as the bolts have swelled and my sockets won't fit also one of the locking wheel nuts is not playing as the socket keeps slipping off so ordered new set of nuts not cheap are they and then I can look after them ie wd40 regularly
