There is good dry slope at Sheffield, ideal for a taster before you go, it's one thing I am glad I learned to do, it's an unbelievable experience. It's worth going just for the atmosphere and to ride on the cable cars. Just don't go to far away first time you go and keep within your capabilities.

I wouldn't suggest a dry slope as a taster, these days it more worth wile going to somewhere like Xcape in MK or Castleford, SnoZone at Tamworth or Chil Factor in Manchester..

At then least its real snow, you can get a better feel for it IMHO.. Thumbs Up

Also.. Wasn't the dry slope ay Sheffield shut down after a fire etc years ago?

I watched a cool video of a guy snowboarding down a derelict slope not so long ago..

Haven't skiied Norway since the 80's. It was maddeningly expensive then. How does it compare cost wise to France these days?

All in for me, with a family, France has always made the most sense. For example, we had an apartment for four in Tignes this Christmas (about 30 seconds from the slope) that cost 650 euros.

At Easter, we have an apartment for TEN, with three bathrooms that is 1150 euros in total.

In France, self catering accommodation is very cheap, though eating and drinking out is expensive - so if that happens to suit you (as it does us) then that would be my recommendation. To look at France and self cater.

For self catering apartments, it is best to start at the resort tourist office website, who usually have very strict rules regarding services and quality - that protect the buyer. I have never had a problem.

For ski passes in France, go Ski a la carte, where basically you only pay for what you ski, get about 15% off each day and every 9th day get a free day:

https://www.skialacarte.fr/FrontOffice/

This helped me over Christmas as SWMBO and youngest took days off - saving me about 400e on traditional week only family pass.

If you are a family and driving you can really keep the costs down.

If you are flying then Les Gets/Morzine is about 90 minutes from Geneva airport.

If you do go Les Gets, consider Ecole Ski 360 in Les gets for lessons.

If you need beers and Apres and prefer to be fed rather than cook, then I would suggest Austria, where small hotels are more the norm and beer is much more reasonable. Haven't skied Italy since the 90's though as I recall it was similar in costs ratio to Austria.

Another thing to consider is the skiing. The ski area(s) in France are usually massive as multiple resorts will usually link together:

Espace Killy
Three Valleys
Port Du Soleil (where Les gets/Morzine is)
 D3 07 SE - still going strong
D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten
RR Classic - gone to car heaven

Was up at the Lecht in Scotland at the weekend, not much snow but I think that will change this week, ski runs here are short but certainly give you a flavour of the bigger mountains and it's just a short run back to civilisation. Worth trying for a weekend if you're in the North East... just give them a call to check snow levels...

I usually ski in Canada where there is guaranteed snow and the ski in - ski out condos can't be beat. Whistler is good but expensive, have a look at somewhere like Big White cheaper less crowded and awesome snow... flights are long but the experience is worth it !

We are just back from Aosta/Pila.
Having had my gall bladder removed 3 weeks earlier I wasn't sure how I'd get on with the skiing (OK as it turned out, but stuck to blues and reds).
The reason we chose Pila was the school ski trip goes there (40 hour coach journey each way!!!) and my eldest boy had been twice and middle once already, so thought if I wasn't good at least they'd know the resort/pistes. They aren't bad skiers as we used to have a corporate ski chalet in Megeve (those were the days Sad) so they had lots of tuition early on, but they do seem to be able to become lost in a B&Q.

I might have headed to Megeve but the snow is not reliable this early in the season.

As for your choice, why not take them to the resort the school goes to, so they will have their bearings and it matches the altitude/slopes they will experience?

Skiing Insurance

Just reading your post and not wanting to be a spoiler but check all Travel Insurance details.

Norway is not part of the European Union but does have some concessions, but possibly not NHS comparable cover?

Your daughter may have a notifiable pre condition which should be cleared with a company offering Holiday Insurance.

Re patriation costs are often not covered by the standard agreement between EU Member states.

I cannot recall the name given to the card that enables transfer of UK status to member states but there is one and it is wholly inadequate.

A good broker should be able to advise, get the right cover. I used to work as an underwriter so have some knowledge and hopefully not relevant!

I hope this response does not upset or worry you but please check this.

E111?

I had no problem last time I used it. I paid the local french bill on a credit card and reclaimed it on return to the UK and got a full recovery in about 4 weeks.

That's the one> E111

Additional Insurance will cover possibly bills up to millions of pounds for possibly tens of pounds.

I would recommend sourcing additional cover.

Sure.. Who wouldn't?

I wasn't implying insurance should not be bought, merely that my experience of using an E111 albeit only once was positive.

Andorra is good for beginners (or it was many years ago) they got my wife skiing after the instructor in Austria took the beginners down the ladies Olympic downhill course after three days. The problem with the Austrian instructors was that they could not understand why people found skiiing so difficult.
A wide variety of runs is not required for someone just learning, just as long as there are plenty of greens and blues.
Definitely endorse the need for extra insurance, the E111 card in not sufficient.

They right skiing isn't difficult - especially on modern equipment. The problem with adults is not the mechanics of skiing itself but overcoming fear of falling and fear of speed.

The reality is that you are more likely to do harm at an advanced level where might be flying down a motorway red at 50mph.

It may have, it's a long time since I went, I only suggested Sheffield as it is no to far from the OP.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

E111

It's now the EHIC and sometimes you need one for your insurance to be valid.

It's free and normally arrives in 7 days.

Cheers all, plenty for SWMBO to look at whilst i’m At Icefest. Last time I did any skiing was close to 30 years ago whilst working in Austria so I imagine a lot will have changed.

Re Insurance, we have a good annual policy that covers Yasmin’s existing condition, comments still appreciated though.
