What I want to know is, what new car out there has good off-road ability, can tow 3.5t, is a good motorway muncher, and has a big boot? Is there an alternative to the D5? I haven't driven one and it'll be a couple of years before I will change the D4, but what is there? DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Oh I don't think you have to be a D4 owner to not like it.
After being a fan of Land Rovers for the last 20 years, I - for one - am coming around to the idea that their modern vehicles no longer cut it alongside the big boys. And Volvo. And Ssangyong. And Skoda.
It has an engine based on a design dating from 2004 (AD)
They borrowed the work experience boy's rear end design (yes, boring, I know )
Installed a shocker of a stereo system from Meridian (whilst competitors have been using other worthy alternatives like Bowers & Wilkins for a while now)
Introduced serious oil dilution problems to their modern engines (including 2.0l Ingenium and 3.0l diesel) resulting in decreased service intervals in increased iron deposits in the oil (sometimes throwing the oil out of spec within a few thousand miles of an oil change)
Dealers who demonstrate woeful after sales care on an all too frequent basis
Meanwhile, other manufacturers have had a mature PHEV and twin engined vehicles on the market for several years.
It is no coincidence that other established members here are observing the same things I am. If JLR had done their research correctly on the D5, they would be selling to existing D3 & D4 owners like hot cakes now. They are not selling in the numbers anticipated for a good reason; the product doesn't tick enough boxes for the D3 & D4 buyer.
Just visit a Merc or Audi dealer. Or a Volvo dealer. Have a look at the GLC, Q7, Q5, XC90, XC60. The interiors are a different class and I'm fairly confident it wouldn't take much to better the awful Land Rover after-sales experience.
It is a very, very, average product.

I'm going to tell my truth, I do not make the change right now to a D5 because economically I should not allow myself, I see too much uncertainty in the future as to get into a 70,000 car right now, I recognize it .... and it's not because D5 looks ugly or different, it is simply because I can not / I must pay now ... and I congratulate those who can fall!!
....this is the only true!! lost in translation!

Correct. I'm on the verge of rejecting it.

As a 7 seat do it all with decent off road ability and a 3.5t towing capacity, it ticks most boxes (I know not all, but probably enough).
Who in their right mind would pay 35k for a Rexton

Well the original post was about D4 to D5 but is now graduating to LR bashing. Most of the above posts make good sense but I am afraid your arguments start to fail when you look around and see how many Evoques DS RRS and FFRR there are around-all reflected in LR sales figures. TBF the least number of LR vehicles I see driving around are the new D5-rare as hens teeth around Chester area and on 2 recent trips to Scotland never saw a one.

Well, I had a go in the XC90 T8 today and was really rather impressed. It is genuinely in a different league to the D5 in terms of in-car tech, so much so that they're not even close. The fit, finish and quality of materials is also significantly better and the Bowers and Wilkins stereo is superb.
That being said, it didn't excite me in any way. Take away the technology and you're left with a comfortable, well made, average handling road car that doesn't do any one thing brilliantly - at least with a Disco you know it's unrivalled off road. Well, I suppose it's unrivalled for safety but that isn't particularly exciting!
The biggest problem is that my wife flat out refused to have one as she likes the 'command' driving position you get with Land Rovers - in the XC90 your head is probably 12" lower than in a Disco. She described it as like driving a normal car, so why not buy a normal car.

So like/ too much a street car, that has no real configuration to utilise the enormous off-road capability. A total enigma, wait for the new Defender, or grab a D4.

The B & W may be superb, but at a crazy price!
My shortlist was a Q7, XC90 and D5.
The Q7 was horrible and the XC90 boring and also more expensive than the D5

I like the XC90 but it does get rather pricey when you start ticking option boxes. And the B&W sound system should be good at almost £3k option price. One thing with the Volvo, the air suspension should be standard in this class of SUV.
It will still be on the shopping list for my D5 replacement but my local dealer really needs to take more of an interest if they want to tempt me away from LR. 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Ignoring the I like it / don't like it argument. The fuel dilution and continuing poor dealer service would rule the D5 out for me. LRs head in the sand approach to engine problems and customer service seems to be continuing. In a crowded market with a product with limited differentiation they can't afford to get basic things wrong.

Clearly there is a lot of passion against (and indeed for) the direction Land Rover has gone in with the new Discovery. I'm personally in the "don't like it" camp and will likely be looking at a younger D4 or XC90 when the time comes. But I respect those who do like the new car.
However what worries me is looking at the various posts about the D5, what happens when the new Defender appears? Will we see protests outside the factory?
